What kind of sealant can be used where petrol is involved?

I guess silicone sealant isn't up to the job...

Dunno. What are you trying to seal?
Dunno. Might be - or do you have empirical evidence that we ought to
    know about?

I just want to put a blob of it round the petrol tap on the SZR, since I
took it off and put it back on, it's got a very slight leak.. almost
    none.
well I put some on (it was clear bathroom silicone sealant) and it sort
of went a gooey brown, so I've assumed it's no good for the job.

Off to Halfords now anyway to see what's on the shelves.

    You guess wrong.
When cured, Silicon Sealant is fuel proof.

Got some proper gasket stuff now, so I'll have the tap off tomorrow
after emptying the tank, remake the gasket, and it'll be spiffy.

What I now need to figure out is how whenever I go somewhere like
Halfords, or a toolshop, I always buy more things than I need.

    semi-serious moment..[1]

    I ain't no shteeeening sales-weasel, nor will I ever be, unless I'm
backed into a corner with no other means of escape.

....No, I'm the guy that trained the Indians to do the crap jobs nobody
else wanted to do. And they love it, because they earn more than most
people do out there... and it hasn't affected anyone's job here either.

Sure, I'm part of a big capitalist nightmare, but personally I have my
own set of lines which I will not cross.

[1] Unusual for a Sunday afternoon, I know, but I'm tired and a bit
grouchy after being called out at 3AM last night and not actually
falling back to sleep until maybe 5... then waking up at 8, 9, 10, etc..

  11. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Silicone, as you may have found, tends to disintegrate on contact with
petrol. What are you sealing - a gasket, flange, edge contact, pipe
    fitting?

Whatever; you'll find better sealants on the shelf of your local motor
factors. Hylomar is pretty good for gasket sealing on carbs; if you go
down to a plumbing trade counter and ask for 'stuff for sealing fuel
pipes' they'll give you a little-tub-wiv=a-brush-in which is rated for
diesel and kerosene but also works quite well with petrol (this would be
    for threaded fittings).

    Bloody silicone !

Guess who had to extract a "Silcone Slug" from out of his fuel line
    yesterday ?
Well that'll be the cause of my mystery fuel starvation problem then.

That must be impossible according to the amazing Crimly Cuurmudgeon as
silicon disintegrates on contact with petrol!
