  2. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Biggles groaned and slumped forward as if he'd been shot. "I say chaps,
dweadfully sorry," said Ginger from the back seat, "I was just cleaning
the old Webley and it went orf."

That is one of the finest books on flying ever written, and (IMHO) one
of the very, very few that counts as "literature".

The author only died recently, IIRC. Made 100, he did.

And on another note, I'm reading N.A.M .Rodger's The Command of the Sea,
Volume Two in his trilogy "A Naval History of Britain".

Volume One is The Safeguard of the Sea (Dark Ages to 1649: "Command"
goes up to 1815), and is out of print in hardback but recently issued in
    p/back.

Both volumes have had rave reviews, and I can see why. It's quite simply
the finest work on Britain, its seafaring, its navy, and how and why
seafaring is utterly woven into this country's history.

It also has a superb glossary and the best bibliography I've ever seen,
in which he not only lists sources but adds a few words of comment on
    them as well.

Utterly, utterly magnificent. Anyone with the slightest interest in
history or ships must read this.

Have you read "First Light", forget who its by, I'll find out... By
    one of The Few....

  13. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Andy Wegg"

    Bell P-39 Airacobra.

I read a book several years ago about a US fighter pilot's experiences
with one of these in the Pacific theatre. Buggered if I recall the name
of the book - the name of his wife or sweetheart (must've been a
contrary bitch) if the plane is anything to go by. Nice looking, but a
tendency to tumble and spin like **** because of the um... interesting
    internal design.

  14. Mid-engined thing. Tricycle undercart, motor behind the pilot driving
the prop through a very long shaft. Unlike a mid-engined car, it had
scary handling charcteristics. A lot were sent to Russia, on the basis
that the Soviets were gonna get fucked by the Luftwaffe anyway.

The Germans tried something (more or less) similar with the Dornier 335,
which had an engine behind the pilot driving a pusher propellor and
another conventional radial engine up front driving a puller prop.
Tricycle undercarriage as well. Crucifor tail. Evil-looking thing.

As German aerospace (quite literally) technology was *at least* a
decade, and arguably two decades, ahead of the rest of the world in
everything except engines, this one worked. It was frighteningly fast,
and would give a jet fighter a hard time. Thank Christ that, as with the
Messerchmitt 262, they only produced a few, too late in the war for them
    to make any difference.

I was going down the same road till I discovered motorcycles. Girls and
    beer followed shortly after.
