OK, I need something to backup SD cards, which is not a computer/laptop
etc. It's for travelling light and basically needs to be uber-reliable
    and simple to use.

That said, I'm willing to accept that the best method might be a netbook
with a second USB drive, for making 2 copies, which are obviously better
than 1, but I'd rather avoid spending that much, coz it's for a gift.

I've used one of the card readers you can attach to an iPod classic -
that worked really well when we were on a long holiday and kept filling
    up the camera.

Not so sensible with the more recent non-HDD iPods, of course.

Quite. Not an option in this instance neither.

Panasonic VW-PT2 40GB Hard Drive for HDC-SD1 and HDC-SD5 come well
recomended, but are pricey for their limited capacity.

    http://www.storagedepot.co.uk/Digital-Photo-Storage/sc889.aspx do
loads of pre configured with drives as well.

Yer ebuyer/scan type places will probably sell enclosures with SD
Backup slots which you can just add a hdd to.

I've got an old Vosonic one with a 120gb drive in it that does CF/SD
etc, and has a little display on it to tell you when the transfer is
complete, can't remember the model number but its been hugely reliable
and has travelled all over the world with various friends and family
    members.

My HP IPaq takes SD cards natively, but there's **** all internal
storage (it's all filled with the GPS app and maps) So maybe an IPaq
without GPS, that'd be able to back up an SDcard.

Probably be fairly cheap too, and can play mp3's, so no need for one
of those crappy iPod things ... ...

    Cheers,

    Paul,.
