  1. Afternoon all,

Good news just passed my theory test today :) ... spent a while reading the
books, high way code sat the test and passed with flying colours.

Seeing that a lot of you are miserable gits from stiff arses from riding in
the cold and sitting on hard seats I thought I'd spread some good news, well
    it is for me.

    So next step DAS.

Been thinking about a change of career and becoming a motorcycle courier.
Any one got any advice on this line of work or any experience would be happy
    to hear about it.

    Cheers

Use www.google.co.uk/advanced_group_search?hl=en to search this newsgroup
for info on working as a courier.

Not a good lifespan/career choice for a new rider though and unless you are
blessed and live in London not a good income plan either.

Bog off. I ride a sofa. GTRs may be motorised whales, but I have stayed
warm and dry on it thus far this winter.

Don't do it. Unless you live in London or Brumingham or A.N.Other major
city, there isn't the work anymore. I blame the interweb thingy for that.

Doesn't pay much, and unless you are an experienced rider, life expectancy
    could be somewhat foreshortened.

I loved my time as a courier, and if I could make the money again, I'd go
back to it. The hours can be long. Winters can be cold. Tarmac hurts when
you land on it. Cars don't yield much when you bounce off them. It can
utterly **** your bike. Insurance is very expensive. It can also be the
biggest hoot of a job ever.

  7. Thanks

I'm used to being broke, am I wrong in being told that one can earn a decent
    wedge in being a courier?

    Cheers

  8. Hmmm doing a bit more reading into it.

When I lived in London there was a lad in the office who couriered around
london on a scoot seemed to do pretty good as far as I can remember. Its
ahame I dont live there anymore.

Thought I could follow his example and put some hours in and earn a fair
wage ... might have to think again

    Cheers

  9. I'm an IT Technician. Not a bad job but not many prospects and the pay is
not to great. So I thought now would be a good time to consider other career
    options.

Perhaps a very proficient rider who doesn't mind risking bouncing off
traffic whilst working long hours in all weathers in a mjor city and is
able to afford seriously expensive insurance, might make decent wedge.

I've previously pondered what the difference in pay between motorbike
and mountain bike couriers, in London is. Given that the outgoings for a
MTB would be substantially less, and it's very feasible that journey
times for central London jobs are similar due to MTB's using pavements
to avoid traffic lights and one way streets etc ergo more jobs per day.

Would have the bonus of keeping you warm and fit as well.

  11. /me hands you some fabreeze for that big ol' sofa ... wonders if it folds
    out into a bed
Having been reading through several sites looks like London is the place you
want to be for this kind of work, flipping typical I used to live in London
    6 months ago, sods law.
Ashame about the pay, I'm an inexperienced rider but getting better by the
day, and learning all the time would imagine it never stops. My life
expenctancy is going to be considerably shorter (my partner) if I dont start
    earning some decent money.
brought a smile to me face. Well the last bit )

    cheers

  12. Blimey dont think I'd last an hour on a MTB in London be gasping for air in
    30 mins.

On the bright side me in some cycle shorts, ladies watch out

    cheers

Surely a step backwards, however one looks at it.

Despatching is very much regarded as a mugs game by anyone I've ever
known hat has done it or met and talked to.

Having avoided them, literally, for the last 10 years in and around
London I get the impression that they really have to be "on it" all the
time to make anything worth having.

It could put you off biking forever.
