Or even a visual indication - like a bus lane. Slap some 'Olympics
marathon line blue' in school zones - that was damn good paint - 5 years
and it is still stuck on the road.

At least then you would be SURE that you were in the school zone!

That would be after you left school? Nobody had them when I started school
in 1948. And few had them when I left school. Never got run over though.

Got my licence at the start of grade 12 (form 6 for the mexicans) in '78.
The school results weren't real flash that year...

Confusing, isn't it. Our High schools go to year 11 only. I did that class
    in 1960.

Maybe you should shove her out in front of traffic then since you are of
    this train of thought.
so you agree you are a wanker?
I think that's something you have to deal with.

We have one on the highway at Blaxland that sometimes flashes. But... I've
seen it flashing before and after the time (more than just a few minutes)
and even on weekends! Some school days it doesn't work, but I can tell -
    there's school kids.

I think it's outrageous that they don't all have working flashers. Now my
kids have left school, I have no idea when hols are on. Especially when I'm
passing within the booking period, but well after the little darlings are
all in class - no kids to see, hols or not? Who knows!

Hmm I had the opposite, I got a .22 at 7 but I wasn't allowed to use the
pushbike on our front driveway*, let alone the main road ! Well not
until we moved south and I was about 12 anyway.

    JL
*Of course the front driveway was about 30km long, and had mad arse 19yr
old jackaroos flogging the shit out of E series utes, WW2 era jeeps and
other ancient machinery up and down it....

There you go - change the speed limit within 10 KM of a school; to to 40 KPH!

When I was a boy, my old man wouldn't let me drive his EH Special
Sedan until we'd done the conversion - substituting an HR disk
brake front end for the incumbent drum front.

Later on, my own EH Premier Wagon came with the HR front end
pre-installed. Turns out that if you crash an EH through a fence
and break off the lower control arm pivot pin, it can be quite a
job finding another complete front end from which to filch a
    replacement pin.

Naah, even at Murmungee they didn't like kids with guns. (Put I was
only there for prep. -- in fact I *was* prep. My brother was half of
    grade 2)

For what it's worth I wasn't allowed to use a gun unsupervised for quite
a while, although my older cousin was considered a suitable supervisor.

From about the age of ten, the kids next door used to ride bikes up
into the Warby Ranges with an old double-barrel shotgun slung across the
handlebars, and come back with a half-dozen rabbits a few hours later.

Then again, the kids next door were tough. I remember the eldest being
beaten up by his old man .. "How many (biff) times do I have to (whop)
tell you (smack) don't ever (bop) steal other people's tools (whack) if
they've got names on them (thump)"

    Erm, that doesn't make sense.
I agree that you probably think that I'm a wanker because you can't deal
with the fact that some people have different opinions than your own.

you mentioned natural selection, if she turns out as misguided as
yourself then she should not be on the gene pool according to your logic.
    You miss the point
You are entitled to your opinion and I have no problem with it unless it
    is fucking stupid.

"We had already had a system that worked. Don't go on the road.
Natural Selection will take care of the rest."

Prior to a few years ago, the whole world survived without school zones. Now
with school zones, it has been shown that they neither slow down traffic,
    nor affect the accident rate.
Perhaps instead of throwing money at feel good, no effect road safety, we
    should actually try something different.
As I said, when I went to school we were taught not to go on the road and I
never heard of anyone being runover. Not at any of my schools, not at any
school anywhere near me. I'm sure it probably happened somewhere once, but
based on the evidence provided, the school zone idea appears to be nothing
more than yet another feel good revenue raising stunt by those charged with
    making our roads safe.
