Well, that's the thing. We all know that the worst school zone speeders and
    tailgaters are the breeders themselves.

School zones is one of the few speeding nonsense rules I agree with, I saw a
school friend have his feet run over when we were kids; it was all his fault
of course, but the car driver was a quivering wreck and the whole thing was
    very unpleasant.

Now, I drive through a school zone in Queanbeyan every morning. It's on Yass
Road. I've been driving to work regularly every day since June, and I have
seen a cop ONCE out there catching speeders. Once. The tradesmen and truck
drivers and p-platers religiously ignore the limit, and it's a 2 lane so
they get a good go. the Queanbeyan Plod are missing an awesome revenue
raising opp, but more than that, if they were fair dinkum about safety,
they'd be out there a hell of alot more than they are.

I totally agree with you, but kids are nongs and always have been.
Little kids have tunnel vision (learned that as a ski instructor); their
peripheral vision is hopeless. And they don't think about consequences. this
goes right through to high school!

So prowling around schools at 40 does make sense.
You can still hit them if they are complete nongs, as long as you're doing
    40.

    Nice one!

Could we have the same penalty for illegal use of Transit Lanes, and
playing really loud, and really crap, music on doof-doof stereos?

And foglights on in clear weather. Not to mention one-eyed jacks and
    badly adjusted headlights.

There'd be a whole new industry in cleaning up the bodies. "Jack's tow
    truck and funeral parlour".

I'm guessing cars with one headlight on, one off. My car does
this frequently. I've never been able to resolve the apparent
electrical problem that causes the headlight lamps to fizz with
monotonous regularity, and so I spend a small fortune replacing
    same, with monotonous regularity.

Notwithstanding that I replace mind as soon as I become aware
that they're dead (typically at the start of any journey ex
home) I'm not sure that its a huge problem anyway. Many if not
all modern cars have a regular incandescent backlight that
lights up the headlight whassname, if not the road in front, so
the perimeters of the vehicle are still identifiable.

It's there in case one falls off the bridge. Or maybe to make cars easier
targets for things dropped off the bridge.

Who lost a windscreen once because of a rock dropped off a ped bridge. Just
    glad it was the car.

Did the gun make it easier or safer to cross the highway?

Agreed. Kids need to be shown fire is hot before they fall into it.

Mind you, educating motorists that the road belongs to everybody wouldn't
hurt either. But kids are easier to educate than adults.

I rode mine to kindy. It was one of those newfangled kindies, a Montessori
    school, in 1948.

No, they drove around at breakneck speeds in cars that had
    non-power-assisted drum brakes.

I tell the kids that just because they follow the rules doesn't mean
    everybody else does.

Just because they walk on the footpath doesn't mean they won't be hit by a
    car.

Between drunks, mobile phone users and them wot thinks their car is just
another room of their house, there's a lot to look out for.
