Problem with that is that many if not most schools were there before the
road became a major arterial road - change your wording to "putting major
arterial road next to an existing school" - that should snarl up the
    traffic nicely!

How many children die or are injuried by speeding cars in school zones,
I don't know the figures but I'd bet the number is extremely low.
In my area lower speed limits around schools seem to be unnecessary as
the volume of traffic at drop off and pick up times slows everyone down
    anyway.
In the area near the primary school closest to my house (Melton Vic) it
would be impossible to do more than 20kph during the times when the
lower speed limit applies so I see no point of the lower limit.
This may not be that case around all schools but applying a one size
fits all model around every school is stupid.
IMO if school zone speed limits were applied in a more common sense
manner there would be a much greater chance of drivers taking notice of
    them.
It appears it is now compulsory to have some sort of clock as well as a
calender which lists all school day in your car to save the stupid Gov
from installing any proper system to tell drivers when the 40kph school
    limits apply.
Also if children's safety is paramount why don't schools and parents
teach children about road safety, it also wouldn't hurt if parents (the
drivers most likely to be speeding in a school zone are parents picking
up kids) took some responsibility for the actions of their children.

NSW RTA web site lists locations of speed cameras, and rationale for
placement of said speed cameras. In most locations, some kind of
history of serious accidents is their justification. In a few locations,
including the four lanes in each direction with no requirement to so
much as fart for a couple of Km much less anything so dangerous as
changing lanes 'Sydney Airport Tunnel' (the short tunnel under runway
34L) the justification for the presense of *two* speed cameras is
"difficult to enforce by other means".

    Go figure.

You have fallen for the government lie that covers their revenue raising. Vehicles doing 40kph are
actually more dangerous to pedestrians than having the vehicles doing normal speeds. At 40,
especially when a speed camera is present, drivers tend to watch their speedo rather than watching
    the road.

Apart from that, kids should be better educated in pedestrian safety. The primary school I attended
was in an old 50 mph zone. There were no lights, just a pedestrian crossing. Nobody from my old
    school was ever run over.

You must live in another NSW.

Of the 4 zones I pass daily, the 4 more in my suburb, and the 6 or so I
pass every other week, none are lit.

troll, but if kids dont have innate sense of avoiding moving vehicles, then
they deserve to be injured/killed. natural selection baby.

I believe that schoolkids today ARE taught road-sense. (Certainly moreso
    than our generation ever was)
But kids are simple and easily distracted so teaching the car-ys is
necessary too (because they're not simple and easily... errr.... )

In our day Clem teenagers were not driving around at breakneck speeds in
WRX's, so parents have to do whatever it takes to protect our children (pick
    them up in a 4WD).

I know two schools which have flashing lights and illuminated speed zone
signs which change when the kids are arriving and leaving. Both of
these pre-date any legislated 40kph school zones in Victoria, and
    possibly other states.

No, they were doing it in EH Holdens and XP Falcons; much heavier
vehicles with much worse brakes and handling.
Isn't the next Qld state election something like two years away? What's
with the early campaigning? Worried that yesterday's reunification with
the Nationals might put your preselection at risk if you don't get the
    early runs on the board?

In all my years of going to school the closest I ever came to getting
hit by a car was when I was walking home from the bus stop after
school. I was about 50 metres from home when a car hit the tree 5
metres from our front gate, and about 9000 metres from my school.

I have. She doesn't go ont the road unless she's holding Mum or Dad's hand.
The truth hurts. Deal with it.

Same. In fact I never even heard of anyone getting run over on a main road
either. I'm always hearing about kids being run over on driveways or in car
parks. In fact most Pedsetrian deaths are over 50s, perhaps we should have
retirement home Zones, wouldn't that be more logical?
But then there's no money to be made there. Much easier to pick an easy cash
cow and just stick with that.

Yeah but there's a big difference between teaching someone how to drive
properly and forcing them to drive slowly.

I agree with both points. There are some signs in Vic., but not everywhere
as there should be. But then, as with speed cameras, one is deemed guilty
until they can prove their innocence.
