Scanners and where to buy from

    Right,

I frequently have a need to scan then email documents when I'm
working but quite often I'm nowhere near an office or a decent power
supply. Does anyone make a scanner that is powered off a laptop just
    by using a usb port?

I know it'd probably drain power from the laptop battery very quickly
but I'm not talking multiple documents here, just a time sheet or job
report that needs to go back to our office. Multiple stuff I can do
when I'm back at the hotel or blag some office space for half an hour
but ideally I need to be able to do this stuff from my van.

I'm pissed off with wandering around trying to scrounge the use of a
fax machine and they're getting rarer by the day on a lot of sites so
my boss has agreed to buy me a scanner if one can be sourced at a
reasonable price. His idea of a reasonable price is that it costs less
than he pays me to wander around offices btw so not a lot.

I use my digital camera for photocopying documents. Print them in fax mode
and they come out just like a monochrome photocopy. Will your phone do the
job to a sensible level of quality? My Nokia 6300 is not too bad on a sheet
of white A4 in good light.

I've got a decent enough camera on my phone or I could use my digital
camera to do the job but scanning means when they print off a hard
copy in the office at work it's a neater job.

    Something *exactly* like that.

It's not as if I need to be using one every day but I get really
pissed off having to walk across a power station, wait for someone to
do the job then walk back again when I could do it in a couple of
minutes sat in my van having a smoke.

    Time to spend company money.

How small would you like it to be?

Might be too pricey, but much more portable than a flatbed.

I ended up buying one of these and Adie is currently scanning her way
through a cardboard box full of old photos.

I don't think she actually realises that it's not her scanner and it's
going to live in my laptop case where she can't get at it.

She's the one fucking off early in the morning, I'll be loafing in bed
watching Soccer AM until it warms up enough for me to do some work on
    the outfit.

oh yes, it's the weekend tomorrow. I suppose I'll have to get used to
there being weekends once I start the new Mon-Fri, 9-5 job.

I'll ask her to send you a copy when she gets back this evening.

I'd barely got the scanner out of its box before she was clambering
into the roof to get the foad box of photos out and after that she was
scanning and converting until about 23:30 when she retired for the
    night.

The scanner's actually a quite decent piece of kit and when it's
packed away in its bag it's probably about the size of a small
cucumber. I need to unplug my laptop and scan a few sheets to see how
much it drains the battery but I can't see it being too bad.

Docupen can be used without needing to be connected to your laptop
when you do the scanning. Later download via USB. If you dont mind
being tethered to your laptop whilst you scan Plustek OpticSlim.
