Didn't want to start off another bloody debate all I wanted to know was what
you guys used. As far as that twat who says use a bloody map goes you try
using a map on a bike to get out of effing Prague towards Berlin in rush
    hour.

Thanks for all your help though I will order my tom-tom and Bluetooth kit
    this week for the i-mate.

    Cheers

I've used a map to find my way around far worse places than Prague,
some of those places don't have any road signs.

Long distance cross-country touring weapon, see. You can adjust for
    local magnetic variation.

Oddly, you have to stop first.

Isn't the sensor mounted on the front of a plastic mudguard or is it
used for negating the effects of the gravity well.

I can see the point of GPS in somewhere like a desert, but for mapped
out places that have distinguishable landmarks and road signs there
really isn't any need for it.

There isn't a need for a 150bhp motorbike on the road but that doesn't

There are a few techniques that makes getting lost much less likely.

And much easier to get yourself out of being lost, once you are.[0]
All you need, then, is the techniques for dealing with it. 20 minutes
over a beer and I can tell you all you need to know.
    Very true.

[0] The unsignalled U-turn at traffic lights, though, is best reserved
for ocassions when you are NOT in an articulated lorry, apparently
headed for the Vatican City in rush-hour.

'Deviation'. As opposed to 'variation' which is what I talked about.

  18. deviation of the compass: departure of the mariner's compass from the
magnetic meridian, owing to the ship's magnetism or other local causes.

declinometer: noun, an instrument for measuring declination in
various senses, especially the _declination of the compass_ or
_magnetic declination_ (ie the deviation of the magnetic needle from
the true north), or the declination or dip of a compass needle (see dip of
    the needle).
[Pity they use the same word for two different things; I was only really
aware of the second definition until I bought an electronic compass recently.]

variation: noun, [...] declination of the compass

    --all Chambers

Either I misread you, or you've got your definitions switched since
    you left the Merchant Marine.

My trick is know the names of the major towns in roughly the direction
you're going and then sticking to the major roads. That way you can
    navigate simply using street signs.

Anything at a local level, just ask a local.

My problem with that is that it is often not clear from the signs when
you have got to the town/city you are using as beacon. Especially so,
where the towns or districts of a city run together. Its so much
    simpler out in the countyside.
