San Mateo to Livermore - best route?

Discussion in 'Bay Area Bikers' started by Oopda Unmonitored Address, Sep 17, 2004.

  1. Option A:
    -92 E (San Mateo Bridge)
    -880 North
    -238 South
    -580 East

    Option B:
    -92 E (San Mateo Bridge)
    -Go through Hayward
    -580 East

Is it advisable to take the longer route (option A) and stay on the
freeway? Or should I save several miles and cut through Hayward (and
if so, which streets do you recommend)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  2. Hey, we (several friends from www.advrider.com and I) went from Woodside
(Alice's on Skyline) through Livermore on Wednesday... We left Alices at
6:20am, and took (I kid you not) Tunitas Creek, Stage Rd, Pescadero Rd,
Alpine Rd, Skyline, 9, 237, Jamison Creek, Empire Grade, Felton Empire Rd,
Zayante Rd, Summit, Highland, Eureka Canyon, Browns Valley, Hazel Dell, Mt
Madonna, Redwood Retreat, Watsonville Rd, Uvas Rd, McKean Rd, Bailey,
Monterey Highway, Metcalfe, San Felipe, Quimby, Mt Hamilton, Mines Rd, and
had lunch in Livermore... Then we proceeded up Collier Canyon, Manning
Rd, Morgan Territory, Marsh Creek, Deer Valley into Antioch, where we made
our way up the highway to Rio Vista and across to Suisun City, then up
Suisin Valley to Wooden Valley to Knoxville Rd around Lake Berryessa, Pope
Canyon Rd, Howell Mountain Rd, Silverado Trail, Oakville Grade, Dry Creek,
Trinity Rd, Warm Springs Rd, Pressley Rd to Petaluma.... Our original
plans involved continuing out to Pt Reyes, back to Fairfax, out to
Bolinas, then down 1 to Sausalito for an even 480 total miles, but we'd
dawdled a bit too much at various gas stops, and got held up by a accident
and some road detours, so it was 8:30pm when we got to Petaluma, and we
decided to scrub the remaining 60 miles (the thought of doing
Bolinas-Fairfax Rd in the dark was a bit scary).. By the time I got
home to Santa Cruz, it was like 10:30pm (and I'd left home at 5am).
Whadda way to spend a day off! Man, I need a GS type bike for these
    rides.

Depends. Are you a God-fearin' law-abidin' rider or a banzai maniacal
crazy? Either way, through Hayward is shorter. BUT! ...there are stop
lights every 50 yds the whole way. So, are you better at lane splitting
duck and weave (freeway) or lane splitting to-the-front-of-the-line stop and
go? Does your bike have a heavy clutch? Would you rather keep moving or do
you not mind stop light mania? On a bike, I think the Hayward follies would
deliver you faster, but at greater effort.

If you do go through Hayward, just stay on 92E. It turns into Jackson and
goes stright for a few miles (stop light city) till it crosses Mission where
it becomes Foothill and starts curving left. Immediately start looking for
    A and B streets. You'll see B before A. Take a right on B and it will
continue staight along and become a 2-lane street. When it reaches a fork,
bear left onto Center St and go up to the next light and hang a right
(Grove). The freeway entrance is just a few hundred yards on the right. If
you miss B, go to A and turn right and follow it around, again R. on Grove,
then go straight out to the freeway. If you take B, and have the time, you
might stop at Val's, the best burgers and shakes in the East Bay. Here's a
map to show the route down B street and the location of Val's at the fork:

    Have a nice ride.

Thanks for the info. Tomorrow, however, I'm sorry to report that I
need to make the trip in the car. So if there are that many
stoplights, I'll take the freeway option.

As for the next bike trip to Mines Rd, I'll try the town route, thanks
to your info. I have a light clutch, and I quite enjoy burgers,
    shakes, and splitting at lights.

    Thanks,
