I don't think I had a mask. If I did, they put it on and took it off
    while I was out.

These days they rarely use gas & air to put you out, although I think
it's sometimes used for children. In any event, it only puts you into
a sleep state while they administer the 'proper' anaesthetic
    afterwards.

On a similar note, some places give you a pre-med (valium, or similar
barbiturates). I made the mistake of taking one the last time I had
surgery, and it left me ill for quite a while after the general would
    have worn off.

I believe it is, but read in an article that the San Diego area is
really bad compared to average[1] houshold income.

  5. Indeed. It's always possible to pick some relatively small area that's
ridiculously expensive, but which has little relevance to the 'ordinary'
person who couldn't afford to live there anyway, unless they won the
lottery. San Diego County is a very large place, populated by 6 million or
so people, the vast majority of them 'ordinary' folks with 'ordinary' wages.
For them, San Diego is expensive. And the Golden Triangle is one of the
most expensive areas. Even within the Golden Triangle there are pockets
that are populated by the super-rich, with some homes costing tens of
millions of dollars (and where rentals don't even exist).

One bonus to living in La Jolla is the free airshow every day. Marine Corp
Air Station Miramar (used to be NAS Miramar, aka Top Gun Academy) is just a
stone's throw away. Not so many F-14s these days, mainly FA-18s.

Last one I had, <fx removes socks> ~ 12 years ago I was still smoking
but advised not to for a few hours after awakening. No idea why, it
    wasn't the don't smoke lecture - just don't for a bit.
