if they managed to get near my kidneys through the incision that was
    made, I'd be *bloody* impressed.

The local newspaper might be of interest.

    This story in particular...

Expect to pay $1400 and up for an apartment in the "Golden Triangle ",
so called because it's one of the most expensive places in the country.
The triangle is (very roughly) the bit of land between the 5, the 805,
    and the 52.

San Diego County is a big place, and there are less expensive town
within commuting distance of La Jolla. Mira Mesa is very close, and
not at all bad. Check out Pacific Beach, too.

There's little public transportation, although "The Coaster" train,
which runs down from Oceanside to San Diego, right along the clifftops,
is a pleasant way to get to work, if only for the spectacular views.

No, per month. If that doesn't sound too bad, remember that that's
the bottom end of the scale for that area.

Sounds pricey but doable. Plus I'm expecting to shack up with some fit
west coast girl as soon as possible, and she'll bring in the monies and
I can use whatever little I earn for bikes and booze.

Bear scribbled on the back of a napkin:
California is AFAIK still the most expensive location in the US to live
in, which is why La Americaine moved to Florida when she lost her job
    there.

That said, Silicon Valley is close to London prices, everything else is
somewhat cheaper so he'll probably be looking at Oxford prices down
    there.

And that's one of the most expensive places in the country?

$1400/mo (as Sterling) wouldn't get you a studio in half the places I've
lived in the last five years. Even where I am now, in the sticks, 750
quid a month would barely get you a 1 bed flat.

It still doesn't sound too bad.

When I had it, they did the injection, put a mask over my face and
told me to take ten deep breathes of the shit. I was terrified that
I'd not breathe enough of it, and wake up half way through so I took
the deepest breaths I've ever taken. I got to four and was out.
