Salutes to Rossi...

  1. Yes, in this world. All other things being equal, inline twins
have a slight advantage. This doesn't prompt me to sell the
    Ducati, though.

Why don't _you_ try rereading my post? AFAICT, why you bought an ST
has never entered the thread. I don't much care why. You said your
toaster has more personality than your ST. I said I'll take bland. I'm
not a tough guitar player. I don't even _play_ guitar. I whack at it.
But for making fun noises, it's a hell of lot better than a
motorcycle. Somebody who can actually play the thing could probaby
come up with a better approximation of a Stearman, or a Cessna, or a
    707 than a motorcycle could.

Don't forget a few more VERY important things for a
sportbike. Size, centre of gravity, ground clearance,
    frontal area...

Inline engines are compact from front to back, allowing a
shorter wheelbase. They carry their weight low, and are
rather wide. Plumbing for both intake and exhaust is
convenient - allowing for good tuning lengths. The
increase width creates more drag at speed.

V Twins are naturally balanced (if at 90 degrees) and do
away with the extra weight and power drain of balance
shafts. They are longer, taller, and narrower. This gives
them a drag coefficient advantage, and increased lean
angles. It also forces a longer wheelbase and less quick
    handling.

V Fours are also naturally balanced. They are shorter than
a V-Twin, and narrower than a I4. This compact design
allows a short wheelbase and a narrow frontal angle.
Plumbing for intake and exhaust is a SOB though, with the
chassis often dictating compromises on tuning lengths.

In general, the more cylinders you have at a given
displacement, the higher the horsepower can be for the same
or less weight. (this may be the reason why in WSB, twins
were allowed to be 1000cc and 4s only 750) It is also why
the motorcycle racing world seems dominated by 4s over 2s.
Why not go further than 4? Well, an inline 8 would likely
produce more hp/lb than a 4, but frontal area and lean
angles would be brutal. Packaging and weight displacement
play a large part in determining which engine fits in which
    bike.

  4. As for Burgess saying a V4 is the ideal, for one, is
    Here's proof...
Sport Rider Magazine dated Augusta 2004 page 98 in an article titled:
    Burgess Jumps Ship...

"The Yamaha factory engineers now have to deliver the power where Rossi
wants it, says Burgess. "If they ignore Rossi's request, they do so at
their own peril. While Burgess agrees that the V4 configuration is the
most compact and suitable for MotoGp. he says he hasn't heard word of
    Yamaha building such an engine"

FYI Honda has not ever used a V4
You must be all of 23 years because back in 1981 Freddie Spencer raced
and won Silverstone Gp on Honda's NR500 4 stroke racer...

    Maybe they will, but
    It's cheap to produce...

Honda gave him the finger first because Colin's middle finger was stuck
    up his nose as usual...

Ah.... it'll be great. I can hardly wait.

The only downside will be that parking and traffic will even
be worse there next year with the additional crowds. Oh well.

I know the japanese far better than you.
That is a bunch of horse shit.
They just don't show it in public.
Honda are kicking themselves for being the idiots that they are.
Rossi has shamed Honda Corporation, and made them look like fools.
    A disgrace in Japan.
