I do find myself treating it like red wine i.e. open a bottle -> drink
    a bottle.

I shall lay in a bottle of something a bit out of the ordinary port-wise
next week from 'Champion' (no not you). They have stuff you don't see
here. Very acceptable with a late night snack of a few chestnuts roast
wrapped in foil in the log burning stove. Tasting notes will follow.

Well Port doesn't keep. It should always be finished promptly on
    opening.

Heh. I had to stop buying it frequently for that very reason.

I restrict myself to 3-4 decent bottles a year now.

What the hell did you expect? I mean *some* of the upper end Sainsbury's
Whiskey is acceptable, but there are far better ones out there at better
    prices IME.

I've never been able to find a decent port in a French
supermarket, mainly because they view it as an apertif, so they tend to
shy away from the rich dark heavy stuff that is proper English port.

Ah, but if you recall, I am a peasant who likes tawny. They have a large
    range of armagnacs though.

If you can stretch to just over £11 then try Grahams Late Bottled
Vintage 1997/8 .... this stuff is very fine indeed, heavyish in style.
A very good lighter styled port is Delaforce.

    i tried a sample in-store. I couldn't finish the little plastic glass
    of it. Disgusting supersweet muck.

apparently - get this! - some people put the cork back in the bottle
    after they've taken it out.

    I know! Unbelievable.

If it's Port it really does go off quite quickly

yeah, I know. Generally, I will drink a bottle over the space of a
week or so, but I have finished an entire bottle in one sitting far,
    far too often.

I've not since I downed a bottle ontop of some Vodka, maybe Tequilla and
redbull as well I forget it was about five years ago.

Still, when it came up it tasted quite nice. I think Port makes the
best tasting vomit; when it's your own, someone else's I wouldn't be so
    keen.

heheh. I haven't drink-related-vomitted for years and years and years,
but from memory, the worse puke is Pernod puke.
