Sainsburys LBV Port - just say no..

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Phil Launchbury, Oct 19, 2006.

  1. Cos even though it's only £6.99 a bottle its actually not even worth
    that.

It's bland, lacking in any subtlety of flavour and doesn't even
    particularly taste nice..

for cheap(ish) Port, I've been drinking Warres Warrior recently - not
    too shabby.

Taylors ikims. For general swigging can't go far wrong with Cockburns imho.

  6. I'll give it a try. It might tide me through until Laithwaites gets in
    some more of my usual..

They seem to have bottles of Dow's somethingorother at half price (under
6 quid a bottle) on a fairly regular basis round my way. Good for
    guzzling by any standards.

Go to O'Porto and ask one of the local producer experts about old Port.

I said I've been drinking it recently - not that I've recently
    discovered it...

Re: your other comment about vintage ports not being any better -
that's as maybe, but the two bottles I mentioned were gifts, so I
    won't knock it...

He didn't say vintage port, just _old_ port. Some specific vintage
years older than that may still be worthwhile paying for.

Like most wines theres a cutoff point which depends a bit on your taste.
Cheap bottles of red wine are, imho, fucking disgusting, white wine
less so, but in both cases I reckon around 10 squids a bottle is the
value point. Ok, for port I might go a bit higer, but not over 25
unless I want to spoil myself.

SO bought a 70 squid bottle for me once and it was fucking lovely, but I
did feel guilty as I was chugging 10 quid a glass after a Chicken
    Jalfrezi :(

Each to there own I suppose. I can't stand sherry, my mate reckons it
because I've never drunk sherry worth drinking, but he's not going to
convince me cos I *know* it's badgers piss.

    snip

But it's ace for marinading end of season cock-birds in. 'Bout three or four
days in it then turn the port into gravy.

Loads better, IMHO, but not convinced that keeping it for ages helps matters.
The only trouble with it is that you really to drink the whole bottle at one
    sitting ...

  19. Really? After sampling some bloody gorgeous whisky whilst up in
Scotland I thought I'd give it a go when I got back. Got a bottle of
Sainsbury's own label stuff and couldn't drink it. Tasted like
    Domestos.
