A fair distance, say, a minute or so on long welded. Guessing, that'd be
about a mile; longer on 60' jointed.

  3. Fascinating. I'd love to know if anyone's done a definitive experiment.

I made the observation that although the US and, probably, Soviet troops
only fought for a year at a time that wasn't an option for the NVA,
    Korean troops or Afghan militia.

What concerns me, and this isn't a dig at you, is the 'romantisiation' of
war through the idolatry of the machinery and mechanisms. The respect
shown to the 11/11 two minutes is in danger of moving away from
remembrance of the individual but to glorification of the event.

    Maybe it's just me.

Maybe just as well given the amount of raw materials (I also include
manpower) he had to throw at the Germans.

Dunno. but would standing on the platform and listening to the rails
sing with stopwatch give you a ballpark? From my experience, it's the
higher frequencys that you hear first, but how high and how soon depends
    on the person.

I went through a set of those on the way back from the Black Horse.

Blokey pulled some levers up in a shed, then came down and closed the
gates. Some[1] time later a train[2] trundled through, matey pulls
some more levers, then comes down and opens the gates.

I didn't know we still had crossings like that.

[1] not inconsiderable - upwards of three minutes. Seemed longer.
[2] more like a bus with no tyres, really.

There are still, surprisingly, a few left. They're expensive to run as
they require manning; they're all about 100 years old and parts require
fabricating from scratch; add on the fact the railways no longer have
dedicated in house carpenters and the like and it's a wonder we have any.

Always makes me think of Blackadder 4. Very funny, but *so* spot on in many
    ways:

    [The big push]
"I just want you to know, when it comes to the big push, the Generals are
    behind you"
"Yes, about 35 miles behind you"

It's amazing how much difference one Bluey can have on your whole day.
But it needs to be a proper letter, an email just doesn't cut it.

There might be the odd exciting moment when you pull the wrong lever, or are
woken from a deep slumber by the sound of a train braking *very* hard.

there's one about 1/2 a mile from my house.

It must be close to being the most boring job in the world, manning the
tin hut with the levers in it.

heh. But no - I've never seen (or been on) a train doing more than
about 15mph along that stretch (Bush Hill Park <-> Enfield Town).

I'm not an expert in physics but even at 15mph a train could probably put a
bit of a dent in most things it hit. Even a suzuki jeep.
