I've always used kero. Never had a problem but I don't clean my bike that
    often.

I've grown to love "De-Solve-it", a citrus based cleaner. The bottle
says it is non-toxic, and I believe them - it seems very mild - but very
effective. If you let it soak for a couple of minutes, it even removes
that baked-on tar which is almost impossible to remove (kero, degreaser
etc all give up in disgust). Seems fine on the paint and plastic - but
the bottle warns against using it on rubber.

Go to a large Shell servo, look for Teepol, now called DOBATEX. (No other Shell carwash products will do).

It's a washing detergent and is more gentle than CT18 truckwash type stuff.

In a squirt bottle and diluted to say, 25-50% it's a brilliant degreaser.

Teepol has had a reputation around aus.moto for years so I finally got some and can vouch for it.

    Otherwise, yes, kero is fine.

Another cleaner AND lube is lanolin-based liquids.

    www.lanotec.com.au

This leaves a dry- greased feel to chains and is very good for rubber orings as not petroleum based.

Bunnings usually have it in the paint section, try the squirt bottle or 1 litre container. But the squirt's good value and a good
    dispenser.

It's now the only chain lube I pack for weekend trips. And it doesnt pick up dirt.
