Uncovering Quack today (after being laid up for 4 weeks) I've found
that his back brake is *really* rusty.

Is there anything I can get it off with or will it just come off as
soon as I start riding him/braking?

    Thanks xxxxx

Uncovering Quack today (after being laid up for 4 weeks) I've found
Others may offer different advise, but I would clean it off with wet & dry
and then go for a light bimble trying out the brakes at lower speeds to see
    if they feel OK.
It may be that after 4 weeks the callipers are a little sticky too, so watch
    out.

If it is only 4 weeks standing surface tarnishing then everything will
come clean the first time the brakes are used are used.

Oil. In quite large quantities. Used engine oil is good, as the
added sulphur compounds really attack the corrosion, converting rust
back into shiny steel. Don't worry about splashing it about a bit, as
any excess will burn off as soon as you brake. The best way to clean
it off, therefore, is to soak the rear brake in loads of old engine
    oil, then ride off smartly.

Don't worry about riding any differently yo normal, apart from you
might want to get a good old head of steam up, to allow the de-rusting
effects to develop fully under extended braking. Then just brake
normally - although you may want to leave it a little later than
usual, then squeeze really hard, to enhance the de-rusting effects.

Why not do the front at the same time? Half the effort, then.

Alternatively, don't worry about it. It's only cosmetic.

Crikey. If you had a Guzzi you'd have to have shares in wet and dry.

Just ride it, apply the brakes to clean the discs. Preferably before you
    need them IYSWIM.

  7. You mean the disk, yes?
    Ride it. It'll come off.

You'd have thought this sort of thing would be second nature to an
    "advanced motorcyclist", wouldn't you?

Not to mention pant-wettingly funny. But as Anne has a similar sense
of humour to a wizened pickled walnut, you couldn't expect her to
    appreciate that.

I've never found anything that was _meant_ to be hurtful, to be
    particularly funny.

I _was_ wondering why Donna had stopped posting here....now I know!

I don't think that SD has a hurtful bone in his body, Anne. If you
knew him, then you would share the same opinion.

In any case, there is a fine tradition, especially round here, of
laughing at the misfortune of others. If you do it enough, the victim
laughs too - that is the definition of robust humour, afaic.
I wasn't aware that she had - although now you mention it, there has
been a lack of xxxx and {{{hugs}}} round here lately. Perhaps there
    should be more.
