    Guys,

I just bought a zz-r 600 for the missus. It has been sitting fairly idle for
a while and it has some rust inside the petrol tank. How much rust is
acceptable? Is it repairable or do you need to replace it? There doesn't
appear to be any hole or any place where it has thined the wall of the tank
just surface rust. Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

The whole bike will be contaminated by now. Can't possibly be ridden,
can't be fixed. I'll give $10 for is 'cause you sound like a nice person.

silly question: are you sure it's rust? is it flaking?

If there is rust, it isn't going to get better by itself.

If it rusts enough for little bits to flake off, it will clog your
filters (if you are lucky) or your carbies/injectors/fuel pump or
whatever your bike uses to get mix fuel with air and put it in the motor.

The usual suggestion is to clean it thoroughly, remove any rust and
apply a special petrol-resistant coating to the inside. Kreme is one
product some have used. Ask at a bike shop. The coating needs to be
applied carefully. If it doesn't take, it can peel off.

Getting the rust out can be tricky. One suggestion is to fut a handful
of nuts and bolts in the tank and roll it around so the inside gets a
    good scraping.
