I saw them in Bluewater last month, but we all did the "pretending not
to see each other so we don't have to admit to shopping in Bluewater"
    thing.

And in this case, is the owner of the damaged vehicle not a third
    party?

How so? If I hit a parked car then the owner is the third party. Why
    is this different?
Hmm, liability insurance, sorta thing? Interesting thought.

Of course, all of this is a moot point over here - both Swiss and (I
beleiev) French motor insurance is on the vehicle, not the driver, so
anyone is insured to drive/ride my vehicles with the same level of
cover. Unfortunately, this means I'm not insured to ride any other UK
    vehicle.

    Like that stops me.

Why not? On their insurance, assuming they have third party cover for
any bike, the owner of the borrowed bike is the third party.

If I had anything to send, I would.

My mood and humour right now is simply an odd result of facing an
infinite supply of misery, despair, and stupidity then deciding to
ignore the lot of it. :)

Where I work I've played with motor insurance for a while in a motor
claims respect, but not in my current role. And here's how it
    generally is:

You are insured "TPF&T": You plant your car in tree. OH DEAR. Buy
yourself a new car and insurance pay tree owner cost of tree.

You are insured "Comprehensive": You plant your car in tree. Insurance
company pay for new car and new tree.

CIHAGM You are insured "TPF&T": You plant mates car in tree. OH DEAR.
You buy mate a new car and insurance pay tree owner cost of tree.

CIHAGM You are insured "Comprehensive": (Never seen this in the UK
outside of business use or really decent specialist insurance) You
plant mates car in tree. OH DEAR. Insurance company pay for new car
    and new tree.

Normal comprehensive insurance: Covers you fully comp in your insured
car and lets you drive other cars Third Party Only. Ditto most bike
    insurances.

Normally fully comp insurance will only cover a vehicle on a road, so
if you park your shiney new car in your driveway/car park/road/etc and
someone kills it you are covered. If you park your car on a beach and
go surfing for a while and find that the tide has come in later on
then you are not insured fully comp. Buy yourself a new car and don't
park it in salty water again.

Most comp ins pols have a clause that say that in a 'medical
emergency' anyone who is licenced to drive that type of vehicle is
able to drive it under your policy at the highest level of insurance
cover that you have paid for.

One I'm not sure of (didn't have to deal with it) this situation: You
have fully comp ins on your car, you are driving mates car (who has
his car insured fully comp) for him as he's on holiday and have parked
it on the road and gone shopping. You are insured Third Party Only
(Not for theft) in his car, but when you come back from shopping you
notice the car has been half inched. Your mate is insured fully comp.
You were insured Third Party Only. Does mates fully comp insurance
cover it, or do you buy mate a new car?

Back in the days when I frequented uk.rec.cars.* someone had the
unfortunate luck to do the following:

Son and father both driving their families on a day out, they decided
to swap over cars (son drives fathers car, etc) and they were both
    insured fully comp.

Son is car in front, emergency stop. Father is car behind and
    rear-ends son.

    Father is in sons car
    Son is in fathers car

They ring up their insurers and say that they were driving their
family members car and that they have been involved in an RTA.

Their insurance company tell them that while they are insured fully
comp on their own cars, they are only insured Third Party Only when
    driving someone elses car.

    Insurance company pays out nothing.

Guess how annoyed they were when they realised that they should have
    switched cars on the claim?
