I don't wear rucksacks when on the bike, I tie them to the rack., or
    saddle.
The map case is handy. You can buy map cases separately.

As to tank bags having no advantage, I disagree, they are as useful as any
other piece of luggage. If you don't like them, they are of no use to you,
but those who like them wilt, obviously, find them extremely useful.

I have a small bar bag to stash items needed while traveling - toll money,
passport, etc. These items then relocate to various pockets, when I'm off
the bike. I then leave the bag open, so thieves can see there's nowt to
pinch...... unless they want the bag.

  2. When I was training for the bike test, it was hammered into us that coming
off, with shoes, or a laptop, or a 'U' antilock wotsit in a rucksack, would
have us in a wheelchair for whatever remained of our lives.

It may have been exaggerration, but it worked, and I haven't worn a
rucksack whilst on the bike since then (the one exception being the
multipack of crispies that SD brought for me on the 2000 TOG run). Plus
most of my touring now is done with an SO on the back, and she'd take a dim
view of a rucksack digging into her ribs.

I crashed wearing a rucksack that contained a Moto Guzzi gearbox. That
was a bastard as I ended up with two bikes off the road.

    Ummm... ow?
If that was the only result, you were probably fairly lucky.

I used a tankbag on the Frankfurt run. On left turns, the horn button
pressed against it and noises resulted. The rest of the away team hoot in
    derision.

Later, I used the bag on the Evil Twin, and it turned off the ignition on
    righthanders...

  8. me too. I hate carrying a ruck sack on a bike. gives me backache.

I guess the peeps earlier in this thread haven't realised that there
are different sizes on bags and they don't all get in the way.

Personally, my preference is to cargo-net a rucksack to the pillion
seat - best of both worlds.

    I do
So far, they have for me.

A small mapcase may be under consideration, though...

  12. Likewise. Tried one on one of my bikes (can't remember which - it might
have been the VFR 750), hated it, got Ventura luggage instead. Now
every bike I get gets a Ventura rack fitted to it - and when I'm not
using the main luggage I have a sports rack that fits on instead.
