RSV speedo etc.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Ian Northeast, Apr 18, 2006.

  1. After jetwashing the RSV yesterday I discovered this morning that none of
the LCD displays work any more. Everything else on the instrument panel
does, tacho, lights etc., even the back light on the non functioning LCDs.

So it looks like a rather expensive trip to Wheel Power:( But this will
have to wait until I've changed the brake pads on the VFR I normally
    commute on.

This wouldn't particularly matter except that one of the LCD displays is
the speedo, and my round trip to work passes 11 speed cameras.

So the question is, can anyone with an RSV with a functioning speedo tell
me what RPM equates to 30MPH in second? It's a 2001 RSV1000R with standard
gearing. I *think* it's about 3000. Today I've probably been pissing off
following traffic by going *under* 30MPH through the cameras to be on the
    safe side.

Or does anyone have any insight into what simple failure can take out
*just* the LCD displays? I don't think it's the "computer" itself as I'm
pretty sure the tacho runs off this.

    TIA, Ian

  2. Probably water drove into some supposedly sealed part and is sitting on
a pcb or a chip. You could take the instrument pod apart and dry things
out slowly, but it'll happen again if you're enthusiastic with the
    pressure washer.

Chances are a dry-out will fix it.

  3. Normally, with LCDs its the contact between the LCD assy and the PCB behind
it, I know this from fixing many a mates mobile phone thats been doused in
beer or hidden in the girlfriend.

If the LCD assy can be seperated from the PCB then a little gentle cleaning
of the contacts it sits on *should* do the trick.

Over zealous cleaning with over abrasive products should be avoided (don't
go there), a little RS contact cleaner on an ear wax remover style cotton
    bud should do the trick.

Then leave the whole assy in the airing cupboard over night.

Before you waste your money, better do what others have recommended
and let everything dry out. Then spray on some WD40 or the like and
reassemble everything. It doesn't take too long and should do the
trick. If it doesn't work, you can still invest your money in Wheel
    Power.

Generally it's a bad idea to wash a bike with these high pressure car
cleaner things. You can damage a lot more if you're standing too
    close.
I have an older RSV, but it should be about right. Just take the VFR
to work until the RSV has dried out.
The ECU and the tach unit work separately and independently. If your
computer was broken, you'd be noticing that.

  10. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Grimly Curmudgeon belched forth and ejected the
    following:
    P6?

I had one of those, my very first "modern" mobile in 1988 )
Aye, I had a NEC summingoruvver before that where you had to pull the
    aerial out with your teeth.

£15 a month line rental and 50p a minute - rounded up to the minute!

  11. OK, I take it you've taken one apart then and it isn't too difficult? I
was afraid it might be a case of 300 little bits pinging out and
distributing themselves liberally over the garage.
I've never had trouble before (I always avoid spraying the wheel
bearings). But I think I will give them up now.
I don't think they vary in this respect, at least until the "Factory"
model which mine isn't. And this morning I carefully followed a chap on a
Fazer who also rides that way regularly through the camera on Balham High
Street where you always have to slow down and it was spot on 3K. So I
think it'll do. Taking the VFR isn't a good idea until I can replace the
brake pads or I'll knack the disc. I'll start taking the RSV apart once
the VF's sorted:) All the speed cameras on my commute are in 30 limits so
it's the only one which matters.

Thanks to all for your help,

    Regards, Ian

It's one circuit board with connections going to screens and sensors.
It ain't rocket science and there are less than 300 loose bits, but
it still reqires more thumb control than changing a truck wheel. If
you've ever changed the internals of a PC or repaired an RC car, you
should be able to do it in short time.

  13. I unrecall the model number, it was approx 8"x6"x3" and weighed a ton.

    Portable, my arse.

Came with a carkit though, so I built it into my topbox with the remote
    handset behind the screen.

    Feek; they've become retro-cool.

**** yes, and the ripoff contract companies who tried to screw you if
you changed your phone, by insisting on a new airtime contract for
    another 12months.
Got a couple cloned to the one number instead - the system was supposed
to throw a wobbly if more than one phone at a time was switched on, but
    it never did.
