We won't be going on the trains till Saturday anyway. In a diesel Seat
Alhambra I'm not likely to attract much attention from cameras.

  5. Heh. I wasn't massively chuffed when I later found out the reason I was
hanging around in woods whilst my friend went 'to see his mate' (in
disguise...) was that his mate was in fact the sub post office. Oh,
yeah, he had his mother's carving knife with him too.

Still, I got off lightly. About five years later he circumcised himself
with a rusty bread knife "so that the police knew he was serious".

Ah, happy days. Foreskins for goalposts.

  6. Somebody has to be head of state and all that effort we as a nation have
put into the genetic selection and improvement of the strain would have
been wasted if we just ditch them.

Couldn't happen. The PM is a Member of Parliament (MP). The Chair or
President of his section of Parliament, the House of Commons, is the
    Speaker of the House.

In theory, the Speaker could be President but currently he/she would be
elected by the MPs not the electorate.

Moot point anyway. If we became a republic then there would have to be some
form of written constitution. That would take several decades to produce
and bankrupt the country by making a generation of QCs very rich.

Here we have a royal family and a consitution. The consitution regularly

Gotcha. But pedantically, we don't directly elect our President,
either. We _vote_ for the man, but he is actually elected by the
Electoral College, a bunch of strangers who are not legally bound to
vote for the candidate their constituents want, and in fact, have
    occasionally not done so.

  12. I agree the speaker position does seem best suited as the base model for
the role of president as they are charged with the task of keeping order
and doing business properly but their brief only extends to the Commons
and it would make necessary many practical changes to tinker with the
system so that it continues to work.

I don't agree that there is a must about this, The Law as it is practiced
in this green and pleasant land with it's roots firmly in precedent should
be enough. A solution which still keeps the lawyers fat and happy but
removes their absolute authority over interpretation of something as
    constraining as a constitution.
