I'm in India for a couple of years and planning to buy a Bullet 500.
The old problem of - will it be registerable at home - comes up. I
notice the Bullet, amongst other things, has the gear change on the
right hand side/brake on left. Is it a requirement of ADR's that the
gear change be on the left/brake on right (as is standard on most
    bikes).

What other issues is anyone aware of with getting the thing approved
    for registration.

    thanx

Surely it'll be cheaper just to buy one here rather than import one?

I looked into this a few years ago...there is no ADR requirement to change
the side the brake and gear levers are on. But then it turned out that it
was cheaper to buy the Enfield in Australia...

If you get one from India, you have to ship it to a mob in SA (Enfield
Cycles Australia) who put the ADR compliance plates on the bike, and then
ship the bike back to you...@ that time the charge for the compliance plate
was around $1200...These guys are also the dealers for Enfield in Oz. They
are the only ones who can stamp the bike for ADR approval in oz.

You also have to do some homework before bringing it in...contact the
Federal Office of Road Safety in Canberra (Dept of transport) for
    "Application for Vehicle import approval".

I believe there is a loophole though (the grey imports loophole) - if you
buy the Bullet in India 12 months before your return, you can get the bike
back and you don't have to go through the ADR...(don't take my words for
it...check the exact laws)...this is the only way it might be cheaper than
buying a new one here in Oz.

You must have owned it overseas for a certain period of time, I think
it's 12 months now. If you have, then it doesn't need to comply with
ADRs, but does need to be roadworthy if you want to register it.

    See http://www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/str_imp-cert.htm for details. You
must make sure you follow all the regs, get the paperwork done properly,
or else they will confiscate the bike at the port of entry.

  5. Check with your insurance company... there are some insurers who won't
insure enfields. The situation may well be worse for a 'grey market'
    enfield.

Peak hour? When everything's doing 20kmh? Should be fine.

Thanks to all who have posted. Basically, from the info posted here
and the various web sites e.g. DOTAR plus an email or two from my
local rego (i.e. in Oz) people it looks as if it is a 'goer' re the
purchase of the Bullet. As I will own it and ride it for at least 12
months there appears to be no problem with importation at a later
date. The cost here for the basic 500cc is around AUD$2100 plus
another AUD$750 to ship it. Sounds like a reasonable deal to me.

As to those who expressed concerns at the performance of the Bullet
(or should that be lack of...) - I have had my days on high
performance machines. The sedate throb of the single 500cc, with it's
sedate performance (top speed of 125kph!) will do it for me.

There is quite a large group of expats in New Delhi who are proud
Enfiels owners. We have a ride arranged in a couple of weeks which
should see about 30 bikes on a bit of a tour with BBQ etc afterwards.
Now that the monsoon is all but over and the temp has dropped to the
30's it should be comfortable and all very social.

    regards
