Route from South coast to Newcastle?

I'm nearly ready to roll on my epic journey North. Thanks to Nev for
his route (which I am pretty much following exactly) and Posty Pat for
pointing out I really should take the high road - a good map makes
    things much clearer :)

So, I'm heading into Sydney from the south on the coast road. As much
as I love the town, I'm happy to skip it this time around; getting to
Newcastle is my goal. It looks like I can either take (1) all the way
through, or possibly (3) through Strathfield and Rye. Any other
options? My vague recollection is that (1) is not freeway all the way -
so - what is the best way through, assuming I don't want to stop?

Ride-report when I get back (but it wont be anywhere near as extensive
as a couple of the recent ones ;)

    Thanks!

    Mark.

    Putty Road..........

So basically you head towards Penrith and across to Windsor then up
    the Putty Road.

If you want more detail let me know

That's OK, I'm such a short, skinny, unassuming chap that I'm always
    getting overlooked.

I'm actually coming back via that road. I'll be happy to sit on the
freeway from Sydney to Newcastle, as my bum will be pretty sore at that
stage! So really, I'm just looking for the quickest route from (1)
South to (1) North through the Sydney metro area. Just staying on (1)
does sound the obvious choice ;)

    Thanks,

    Mark.

But if I was you I would go via The airport and Tom Ugleys bridge. When you
get next to the city you basically get on the Tollway which takes you
straight through / under the city
and next thing you know you are at North Sydney

Cool - thanks. What are the tolls? A toll-booth on a bike sounds like
    a PITA though :(

  8. Try turning off at Nowra and heading up through Kangaroo Valley, Moss Vale
and on to hume at Mittagong. Follow the Cumberland Highway (route 7)
through Shitme and it'll bring you to the start of the F3 Freeway to
Newcastle. If you're not too tired take the Berowra exit and head up the
Old Road (works good on a Friday too, especially with the road works going
    on on the F3).

Thanks Pete - that is exactly what I was looking for. And my apologies
for calling you Posty Pat in my last message - to many PPs :)

Take the Wollombi Rd then, runs roughly parallel to the east of the Putty,
GOOD stuff, get's you into the Hunter as well.
Windsor, Wisemans Ferry, then follow the road on the northern banks all the
way (ripper road during the week) to Central Mangrove, turn left here and
    have even more fun.
    Cheers

Bulldog clip. Mount the bottom leg to the right hand bar
(maybe mirror mount) with the jaws horizontal towards you.
Place correct change in clip. When at tollgate, cup right
hand under clip and depress top leg with thumb. Change
falls into hand. No need to remove gloves or use left
    hand at all.

If you go through sydney, you will hit traffic somewhere,

    One possible way is:
Left onto heathcote road at heatcote (35 mins from wollongong).
Right onto old illawarra road (about 10 mins later)
Left then right at menai (10 mins)
Right at the hume highway near bankstown (25 mins later)
Left onto centennary drive at homebush (5 mins)
Left onto the pacific highway near ryde (30 mins)
Right onto the main Freeway north (somewhere past hornsby.) 10 mins

This is based on non peak hour traffic.

mmm - that looks good. I will continue on (1) to just past Woolongong,
then onto 69, which looks like it will take me all the way to Windsor.
I think I will turn right, get back on (1), then off at (83) to continue
    the old road to Newcastle.

    Thanks,

    Mark.
