I have often seen someone posting who has his wife's relatives in
Guadalajara and often rides down on a bike.

If you read this, drop me a line and let me know the route you follow.
Mexico rt 54 seems the most direct but most internet maps hardly show it at
    all.

now Jerry, he seems pretty sincere, as well as unknowing of current
events. I'm going by Bill's place in about an hour and I'll pose the
question to him. Tomorrow I'll post up his directions.

Google maps show it. And yes, Mex 54 is the most direct, and perhaps
the quickest at least to Zacatecas. Then you have a choice of
continuing on 54 through the mountains if you wish, or take Mex 45 to
Aguascalientes and catch Mex 80 to Guadalajara. I've not gone through
Aguascalientes, but I understand that it's more like a highway than
    54.

Laredo to Monterey to Saltillo to Zacatecas to Guadalajara.
It was a smiley faced half hour in the telling, so thanks for asking.

Re the question on the pistol.

DON'T! If you get caught at one of the check points with a weapon, you WILL
DO seven years in a Mexican prison.

Unfortunately, today's Supreme Court decision does not apply to Mexico.

I may not have known the best route from Laredo to Guadalajara, but I worked
in Mexico with the US government for several years.

That's a great idea to leave your weapons behind and the risk is high
if you are caught, but to categorically say you "WILL DO" seven years
in a Mexican prison is not neccessarily true.

Some of us are a first hand witness of the opposite.
