rotate driveshaft 90 degrees to vertical

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by Allan Morrison, Oct 8, 2003.

  1. I require 50-100+ hp at a vertical shaft.

Is it possible to rotate the last output gear and cover plate up 90
degrees so the output is in a verticle shaft.

Or can the rear wheel axel drive be rotated 90 degrees up so the wheel
    axel is vertical?

    Thanks

The machine work required to do what you want is fairly
straightforward (I would try to take it straight off the engine output
rather than using the rear-wheel drive to cut down on gear-train power
loss). But if this is for marine (or especially for aviation) use,
you will need a motorcycle engine that is rate somewhere around 150hp
MINIMUM, to get anywhere near a reliable 50-75 hp. Motorcycle
engines, like private auto engines, spend the vast majority of their
life at about 20-30 percent output, and quickly become unrealiable
when asked to perform at continious high outputs.

Motorcycle engines have been used with very limited success in small
fixed-wing aircraft. But mostly they have just been hobbyist's
brainstorms and quickly replaced with engine specifically designed for
the task once the owner can afford it. IMO, it is far better to save
the coins and get the engine one needs at the outset, unless, of
course, this for an engineering school project or something.
