Rossi's virtual V4...

  1. Quote from Jan 05 T.W.O. mag...

"In 2003 the Yamaha M1 secured a single podium, and a right slagging from the
riders who conducted their business on it. They were almost as vociferous as the
previous M1 incumbent Max Biaggi, a rider who at least scored wins in its first
    year 2002."

"So what turned last year's pup into this year's lion?"

"Well, you'd be surprised how much of the M1 is basically the same as the 2003
model. The main change is to the engine, with the M1 now going from a
conventional across the frame four to a simulated vee, which means that the
actual crank design has been altered, so that the engine now fires two cylinders
close together, and the others shortly after."

"The big benefit is in traction and engine response, and most of all it makes
the bike feel more similar to the V5 Honda Rossi is used to riding."

"The turn around in the machine is best described by the overall Yamaha Racing
    Chief, Masao Furusawa."

"This year the first thing I did was change the engine, to make much better
power delivery to the rear tire. That is what you can call the big bang or
growler engine. I still don;t believe the big bang theory itself, but we changed
the engines! We then increased the horsepower step by step."

"A series of small steps for Yamaha, a giant leap for MotoGp."

My thought??? I think Yamaha is drafting a V4 during the off season... Rossi
    deserves the best...

  2. Why? The width of the engine is far less of an issue now (it's not
limiting ground clearance), the weight balance is good on the current
M1, and you have the V4 traction behavior which apparently does make a
    big difference.

I'd expect Yamaha to stick with the Growler I4, they understand the I4
really well, its doing quite well in the races, and it will establish
a much stronger connection to the next-gen R1 (which I'd almost bet
    will be a growler I4).

I agree. They will stay with I4's to advance development of their
    consumer machines.

  4. Jeremy Burgess... Rossi's chief wrench... has gone on record stating that the V4
is by far the best engine configuration for MotoGp... he says that of the V4's
    because :
1... inherent broad spread of power...
2... inherent lower internal friction because the V4 has only 3 main bearings
versus 5 main bearings on the I4...
3... inherent smaller crankshaft that offers less rotational mass to influence
    handling...
4... inherent small frontal area for decrease drag...

You're forgetting the Growler I4 places a lot more stress on engine cases... the
M1 gets by because the engine cases are machined from solid billet aluminum for
about 50K a copy... a prohibit expense for production... so far the only parts
the R1 share with the M1 is paint and plastic...

  5. There's only so much you can do to over come the inherent problems of an I4...
at some point the V4 advantage makes more sense... and you'll be happier for it
    too...

  6. Why handicap yourself with ONLY 4 cylinders? Get a V-8!
Guzzi proved you could build a workable 500cc V8...in the
50's. Yes it was a bitch to synch the carbs and yes they had
serious issues with waterpumps committing hari-kari.
