    I'm thinking about the howls of outrage and uncontrolled bed-wetting this
    comment would cause on aus.cars.

    Ah, yes. Back in them days, and for quite a while after, I used to be
    interested.

    The days when F1 was the pinnacle of car development.

    Once it went to the rule sez the engine will be thus and so and the
    configuration thus and so, and the whole thing became so stupidly over
    governed... no, it is just a _very_ expensive advertisement.

    regards,

    Nuvolari preceded the World Championship Grands Prix but won many races and
    Championships in Europe.
    According to this page:
    http://www.ddavid.com/formula1/nuvo_bio.htm
    ...he started racing bikes about 1920 and continued to race cars until 1948
    so my father would've been 15-43 then so that definitely qualifies as "his
    time"!

    Well it must have been a bastard downgrade having to go down from V12 to
    V10, having to go down to a namby pamby half arsed 8 cylinders is just,
    well,embarrasing really.

    Gawd I sold John Surtees short; he was the '56, 58, '59 and '60 500
    champion and the '58, '59 and '60 350 champion (all on MV Agusta).
    He also won his only 250 GP start in 1955 on an NSU.

    He won the 1964 F1 championship for Ferrari.

    Dott.Ferdinand Porsche called him
    "The greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future."

    "He was a fantastic 'biker' before he started racing cars. In fact I
    remember
    reading about a race he participated in at Monza in the 30's that
    showed how tough, determined he was. During practice he had an
    almighty crash and had broken both legs so you can imagine the
    surprise when he arrived back at the track the next day for the race
    complete with two heavy casts on his legs. The Doctor washed his
    hands of the whole thing and Nuvolari had his mechanics strap him to
    the bike on the grid, then hold him up for the start. Get this - he
    won the race, going away, and as he cruised back to the finish line
    the mechanics had to come out onto the track to catch him so he
    wouldn't fall over."

    Could Rossi do it?

    That just about classifies him ahead of Rossi at this stage doesn't it?
    By 1 F1 championship!
    Rossi -
    1997 - 125;
    1999 - 250;
    2001 - 500;
    2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 - MotoGP
