This is a new one to me, at least..
Great Oaks offramp on 85, it comes to a stop sign. You can either go
    right or left.
100 yards down Great Oaks on the right, I see guys standing in the road.
    Four or five of em.
I approach, they hold up a little stop sign. Cops. No police cars in
    sight.
They have a line of cars being processed for rolling through the stop
sign. Handing out tickets as fast as they can write them.

What gets my goat is drivers who roll through a red light to make an
otherwise legal right turn. They simply don't want to wait for you to
pass through the intersection with the green light, and would rather
turn illegally in front of you and force you to slow down while they get
their obnoxious asses up to speed. Very rude indeed.

Try this, just put your clutch hand down and flag them back....you will
find that works in almost all cases. these people tail gate absent
mindedly. I wave at em after they fade back.

Nice generalization, Jim. I'm sure not ALL of us do it.

  7. At least, not all of the time. I only do it when I'm late for work because
I've stayed up all night watching Rockford reruns and slept through my
alarm clock which had the wrong time anyway because I forgot about spring
ahead fall back and if I'm late one more time the boss is gonna can me but
I'm gonna stay one step ahead of the repo man this time, at least they're
not gonna get my 20's this time because I used that stolen credit card and
they'll never trace it back to me and do you think the boss is gonna
notice how my hands are twitching today...

As my cousin explained to me when I moved here 38 years ago, the true
California stop is capable of being turned into the conventional kind
if there is any need to do so. I see it as a creative response to the
overliberal placement of stop signs where yield signs would serve.

Geez, every time I see the subject: line of this thread I open it
expecting to read something about Mick Jagger, Keith Richards or a
concert somewhere. I must be old.

I tried that once - I was going ~5mpg above the speed limit on Junipero
Sierra (going through Stanford campus). A couple of teens in a big
buick tailgated me - I gave them the "slow it down" sign and they faded
back - briefly - then they charged up, pulled into the bicycle lane on
my right. When they were along side they pulled hard to the left on top
    off me.

I was about the accelerate hard - but there was traffic ahead, so I
figured letting them go was the safest course: While following them, I
memorized their plates and noted that they turned into Stanford campus -
so I called the Stanford police and reported them.

Or if you have a cup of coffee in your hand throw it all over the car
"in a panic reaction to almost being hit" - after all, if the car did
not enter the crosswalk while you were in it - the coffee wouldn't have
hit their car. Oh - but don't throw starbucks - it costs more than a
    carwash ;)

Ayup ... I am in YOUR rear view and I'm not tailgating.

    Your truck is THAT big?

(that it appears to be tailgating when it isn't)

Ok, that was a piss-poor attempt at humor...

In reply to Phil, waving people back doesn't always work...I've had quite a
few folks redouble their tailgating efforts after being waved back.
Apparently they were angry that I was keeping them from tailgating the car
    in front of me...

(And no, I was not waving them back with the middle finger)

One day I pulled up along side John Law at a traffic light. I was
in the number 1 lane and he was in a left turn pocket. He gets a
green arrow and starts to make a U-turn and then jams on the brakes
when some brain dead twit on a Kawasaki rolls though a red light
in front of his Crown Vic. Too bad he stopped. A black and white
parked on top of a copsickle would have been a real "Kodak moment".

Unless there was a collision *and* and injury, the cops don't give a
shit. I learned this when someone pulled onto the median of 580 and
tried to squeeze me into another car.

It also helps if you can get a look at the driver's face. The police may
or may not do anything if you do not say that you can possitively
    identify teh driver.

If the car gets close enough, I'll try to punch out a window. That
    usually gets their attention.

    It's huge.
    Hmmm ... maybe.
Actually, I understand the law of tonnage and don't follow so close that I
can't avoid an accident if someone else does something unexpected.
I do this but a little differently. Instead of just a wave, I pick an
appropriate time and turn around (face rearwards) and give them a back off
wave. The face time seems to make them realize that a human is actually
    riding the bike.
    Me either.
