Grey import bikes tend to be models not available in the UK
(eg. NSR250, NC24, GSXR400) rather than cheap imports of current
    models.

I think you mean parallel imports. Either that or you're still talking
    complete bollocks.

    And did they win ?

Anyone can sue anyone. Winning is a whole different discussion.

What were the grounds of the suit ? 10 quid says it wasn't "you bastard
you grey imported Levis" it was more likely "you has a contract of
supply with us that said we'd sell to you provided you only bought from
us" big difference between breaking a contract a law preventing them
    grey importing.

If the above is the case, then there's nothing stopping someone else
doing the grey importing, just tescos

So, if there's a market there that's not being filled, why aren't you
    taking the huge arbitrage profits.

Could it be <shock horror> because the British consumer already has the
choice, and all your posing about how terrible Triumph is, is exactly that ?

(heaven forfends that the market would reach equilibrium)

John Littler scribbled on the back of a napkin:
Nope, Tescos didn't have a contract with them - IIRC Levis' claim went
somewhere along the lines of trademark infringement (as if Tescos were
selling cheap fakes) and brand dilution or something like this. Can't
be arsed to google for it. Basically the idea was that importing the
cheaper jeans from outside damaged the Levis' brand name as they
apparently weren't the same standard as the ones source in the EU.

Call me a cynic but given the different Levis I've encountered so far
my guess would be that the only thing that wasn't up to the same
    standard was the price tag.
AFAIK it killed the grey import Levis trade dead and had a knock-on
effect on a lot of other 'grey' import businesses as well.

For some reason the post from the OP is not showing, and nor is the OP
    posting name.

Anyway, to try and clarify things a bit, in the UK apart from the UK
officially imported bikes that you get you also can obtain either a
'grey' import or a 'parallel' import.

Now, obviously a 'grey' would be a model that wouldn't normally be seen
on these shores, and I was pretty sure until I got my ZXR400 that most
400's were in fact grey and not parallel, or even official UK imports.

In short, I got my arse severley kicked wrt my original thinking, and
most of the 400 models have been official imports into the UK, so the
OP is talking out of his arse in that respect.

Naturally, we really need TOG to verify the facts.

Haven't the grey imports shoved the native red ones off the patch?

I was thinking more of the slang usage:

Noun. 1. A sexual deviant, having been convicted of a sex crime
    against children.
    2. An objectionable or contemptible person, by extension of the
    definition in noun 1.

    I can't give a definitive answer. A number of 400s were officially
imported into the UK for a while; most notably the ZXR400, but also
one or both of the NC30/NC35, and, I believe, the FZR400. However, a
    load of others weren't - the CBR400, the GSX-R400, and (again, I
believe) most of the SP versions. On top of this, none of the weird
and wacky models (ZZR400, CB400, etc) were officially imported.

In short, 400s in this country can be official, grey or parallel.

and you're only talking about inline fours. There are plenty of single
cylinder dirt bikes officially imported into the UK.

And wasn't there a Ducati 400SS "Junior" twin officially imported? I
know Hursts in Belfast used to sell them...

Parallels are bikes which are normally sold in the UK but not imported or
    sold by the official importer.

Fireblades from France, Goldwings from Canada, that sort of thing.

Grays are bikes where the model is not sold by the official importer.

    FZR250R, CBR400RR and suchlike.
