There was a lad on the Fiat Coupe forum (and remember these people were a
long way from being the sharpest tools in the shed) who was anti-capitalist
    and, apparently, anti-capital as well[1].

During a heated debated on the subject he pointed me to this page
    http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/w/x/wxk116/antic/ to explain how wonderful
life would be in a world of barter[2].

When I pointed out the many, many flaws he told me that I was only saying
that because I was a programmed drone :(

[1] Despite owning a couple of cars, a nice house, all the trimmings of a
capitalist pig, in fact. When pulled up on this his reply was (and I
quote), "I have nothing to gain by living the life of a non-capitalist".
[2] He referred to it as "a classic"

Hmm, I see one of two things happening here. 1, you are in fact Eliza,
an inflexible computer program, or 2, you're unable to see past little
factual errors and see the point someones making.

Its good to see that economics triumphs over morailty and common sense
in your world. You keep paying the full RRP for everything, refuse all
those discounts places offer, cause you know that they're just
depriving the poor workers and management of their christmas bonus, and
I'll enjoy more money in my back pocket.

Or, as with cars a couple of years ago, a significant number of people
get off their arses, goto Europe and buy cheaper. Forcing the UK
businesses to realise the public won't put up with their inflated
    prices much longer.
By taking advantage of the British gullible attitude.

When did you last turn down a christmas bonus? Why should you have
money in your back pocket rather than those poor workers?

What *really* does my tits is people suggesting going to local shops
to try on helmets, then buying the helmet itself online, as if those
shops are there as some kind of public service.

"Rip off Britain" is one thing (and mostly imaginary) - fucking
other people over for your own benefit entirely is another.

The point being made there was no matter whether you agree with that
particular model or not does not affect it's existence and commonplace
use. It is one of the cornerstones of market economy, if not /the/
    cornerstone.

    I wasn't only highlighting a factual error; I was, in a rather
patronising way, expressing the opinion you're a moron who has little or
no concept of economics and is little qualified to offer an opinion or
    analysis on it.

eh? If a product is too expensive don't buy it. The Triumph company,
like many others, pitch their product at a price that they believe will
allow them to shift enough units to stay in business; keep their
    shareholders happy and allow re-investment.

That is fact - whether or not you like or agree with it - they are not
the only suppliers of performance/cruiser/high end/whatever motorcycles -
it is an open market. Another factor you fail to consider is the markets
here and in the US are different.

Economics and buying decisions are not solely based on price so again you
    reinforce my opinion.

    In spades.

Cause I've worked for it? Novel concept, I agree.

And you are assuming that if they dropped the prices to match the US
they wouldn't make any more profit, the increase in total sales would
just cover the decrease in profits per unit.
That does nark me too. I'll support good local shops, but those shops
    aren't the manufacturers.
    Why do you think imaginary?

Take HiFi or AV gear. I can fly to HongKong and back, buy a high end
amp or projector there, and *still* be quids in when I come back. To
the tune of 40% of the cost in some cases.

Looking at the prices of electronic gear in Florida its cheaper.

Lots of consumer programs have covered this.

    <snip waffle>

As has been said before, this is no different to the high prices of
cars in the UK that was 'found out', causing a lot of people to buy
from europe, forcing the UK prices more into line, i.e. fairer.

I know it, heaps of people in UKRM know it, enough people in the UK
know it, so much they forced the car manufacturers to re-think.

If you think this sort of unjustifiable price fixing is perfectly
acceptable then you're more of a fuckwit than I thought you were.

Sounds reasonable to me. Personally, I wouldn't be arsed, although I
did buy one (replacement of same model) helmet on-line 'cos it was
cheaper. But I don't have a problem with others doing it.
It's what makes the world go around.

I think "wrong" may be the word I'm looking for.

And when those local shops go out of business because they can't

where do I try on my next lid?

Well, Rover went bust, Fiat are on the brink as are General Motors and
Ford are losing money like there's no tomorrow, Nissan have been bailed
out by Renault and Mercedes had to merge with Chrysler so both could
    stay afloat.

  18. The big problem for the retailer, is when the punter finds he can get
it cheaper elsewhere. This has been the case in the car and bike
markets for some time. the manufacturer still sells the same number of
units, but the dealers in the different countries [well within the EU
anyway] suffer or enjoy periods of boom and bust. the Internet has
made people wise beyond belief on prices.

IMO, Frag was doing well sorting out all comers on this, until
somewhere up there ^^^^^^^ he called someone a f*ckwit.

Frag, why win the argument on good stuff then spoil it all with an
    insult?

And some of your AV gear is not the same.

You can waste thousands of pounds on a plasma or LCD tele and still
not get proper velvet blacks. Substandard rubbish for those with
untrained eyes. <Waits for float to bobble>
