  1. this sound amazingly familiar to my "system".

My CDs are all over the place but I can still find what I want pretty
quickly. My 7" singles are in numerical order (which is broadly the
order I purchased them in) and I know what is where from their position
on the shelf. I rarely need to consult a list to double check. Now that
just shows I have an amazing memory for "rubbish".

Mine are grouped by artist but not necessarily in alphabetical order.

Lost Weekend, by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions.

I think the first album was Alphabet Zoo by Ralph McTell. I was 6, ffs.

You should have decked her on the way out the door then. She'd have been
begging to have you back ;-)

Mine are in genre, then by artist. And in chronological order by that
    artist (compilations come last).

I can remember roughly which pile a given CD is in.
as mentioned, I have very few 7" singles, but all my 12" singles, EPs
and LPs are in one place.

However, I don't have a working turntable at the moment...

I'm just struggling to imagine Blaney's list of 'genres'. Jazz, jazz,
    jazz and others.

But seriously, any 'system' that attempt to categorise by genre is
always going to be problematic - where does metal become rock become
blues become jazz? What about artists that have stuff in more than one
category? What about individual albums that contain stuff in more than
    one?

It is primarily jazz, though there's a substantial classical element.
There's also some (mainly contemporary) rock/pop. Then there's spoken
    word. That's my four categories.
John Lee Hooker, for example, is in rock/pop, in my schema.
Don't know if I have any. There's the orchestral renditions of
Radiohead songs, but that's still in my amazon basket, rather than on
my shelves. I suspect it'll go in Classical.
Not sure I have anything like that.

Wha? One of the finest blues exponents ever, you think is rock?
Well you quite clearly are unable to distiguish between genres, so I
can see why you're not sure.

I don't have a blues section. And I don't want to keep seeing it when

Perhaps you should have a blues section with one entry.

This is the general problem with classification. Where does one put
    the platypus...?
    ....is the only response.
