Roadworks to the Island

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Martin Taylor, Mar 30, 2005.

  1. Just got back from the Island, after taking some stuff over to the house
where I'm staying. For those who are coming down from NSW and places
north, it might pay to avoid the Strezlecki Highway (Morwell - Mirboo
Nth - Leongatha. It's got a lot of roadworks going on at present, and a
good deal of crap over the roads. Also, those traffic light thingys are
in place in about 6 different spots between Morwell and Leongatha, where
the road is down to one lane.

An alternative is to head down Princes Highway to Yarragon, then turn
left just as you leave the town. Head to Ellinbank, then to Korumburra,
Konwak and Wonthaggi. Beautiful country, and some good twisties, but
it's tight in places. Just watch out for farmers and their tractors and
4WDs, some livestock (I nearly cleaned up a half a dozen sheep on the
way back). Only one spot where there are roadworks, just out of
    Korumburra heading towards Warragul.

Not to mention the area has quite a few controlled burns going on at the
moment, which is pushing wildlife onto road margins. I've seen more
wildlife of all sizes dead on the side of the road in the last week than
over two years of commuting the same route. One casualty is a fox that
I'm sure belongs to the family of foxes that helped me come unstuck just
    before Christmas.
There's also quite a bit of ash falling from big controlled burns in the
Baw Baw/Noojee/Bunyip State Forest area (we're 30km away and ash is
floating around everywhere), so expect some slippery trips once the
moisture settles and turns the ash to sludge.

  3. Bugger, this was posted about 6 hours before my mate collected a wallaby
just at the Foster turnoff about 40 km out of Leongatha :-(

Fortunately he managed to not drop his bike, but it looks like some of
the fairing the little bugger smashed up managed to poke a hole in the
    radiator so it wasn't rideable.

(Thats my excuse for missing the BBQ, we had to wait 3 hours for his
brother to drive back to Melbourne and come out to Foster with the
trailer to collect the Aprilia. We didn't end up on the Island till
    midnight or so...)

  5. Yeah, but I figured if you still were, I'd be about 4 million drinks
behind, and we wouldn't even be speaking the same language :)

  6. I'm sure we could've remedied that problem!
    So Boky said.
