    ?

B1176 needs repair in places, and stonking brakes if the 90deg bends catch
    you out :)

The biggest rush I've had on a British road was the M20.

    Eh Nige?

Not far from where I lived for a whole as kid (near Sleaford). Looks nice
and not as flat as some of the neighbouring areas

It was pretty fucking good :)

When we pulled into the Dover petrol station & that van of coppers turned
    up.....

It cleaned off the spark plugs, this much I remember.

especially the bit from Alresford to Petersfield. Swoopy heaven.

Much better than that nasty A34/M3/M27 that people take in their cars when
travelling to visit relatives in Portsmouth. They go so slowly on this
    stretch of road.

Bad form replying to one's own post but I've just thought of a couple of
contenders: B4450 and B4242 (Sam Helen). Neither of them are
particularly fast (except for the very brave/foolhardy) but just the right
combination of straight bits, twisty bits and wonderful views.

I have just realised how comprehensive Google Streetview's coverage has
become. It is now possible to enjoy a virtual drive down almost any road.
This is worrying. It has the potential to occupy me for hours at a time.

That was the worst french run I've done, entirely thanks to having The
Fear for two weeks afterwards. Especially when you got that fucking NIP
    for your old landy.

But the run from Clackett Lane to Dover was nothing short of immense.
Historic. Amazing. Legendary, even. The only thing it lacked was an
    armed roadblock.

Also, if in that neck of the woods, A339 Alton to Basingstoke is pretty
    damned good.

The B3349 Alton to Odiham isn't too bad, either.

cf. the return journey where AntE, Kiran and I did get a tug - for
doing ~80mph. OK, so it was absolutely hosing it down and we had dark
    visors, but even so...

Your contribution was minimal, I assure you. The Fear kicked in when the
plod van Nige mentioned appeared behind us at Dover.

....whereas I avoided the M20 and went cross-country through Kent. Had a
lovely ride home in the sun and didn't get my collar felt once.

I've almost got a clean licence now! Almost.

  17. Someone here once suggested Ripon to Richmond (A6108?). First time I
tried it I couldn't stop smiling afterwards.

    Fuel & cuppa at Abergavenny.
    A40/A470 to Builth Wells.
A470 to Llangurig, A44 to Aberystwyth.
A487 to Machynlleth, A487/A470 to Mallwud.
Then a choice, A470/A489 to Newtown or A458 to Welshpool, then A483 to
    Newtown.
    A483 to Llandrindod Wells.
    Stop for fuel & cuppa.

    Or...
A830 from Fort William to Mallaig

    Or...
The A87 has some cracking bits with good scenery...

    Or...
A82 Tarbet to Glencoe on an early summer morning...

those are very good roads with superb scenery. Take care, especially on
weekends when plod are about in abundance.

Look on a map for the B road alternatives that run in parallel in places.
Less likely to see plod and more fun on an R-GS.
