On most autos afaik, putting them in park locks the gearbox by locating
a pin into a shaft. If you stop on a hill & put them in park without
first using the handbrake, it can be a right bugger getting them out of
park again once you've taken your foot off the brake & the car's rolled
forward to take up the strain.

The pin & shaft don't like to be separated once they've got a tonne or
two of car forcing them together. At least that was the case on the
three autos I've owned (two Cherokees & a Saab 900 Turbo).

Fun being young innit. I remember the first (& only) time I tried to do
a handbrake turn in my parents Subaru pick-up. Those who know Subarus
will realise why that was a particularly dumb thing to do :-/

  6. The XJ12 didn't like that at all, as I found out. Oops. No parking brake
    anymore.

  9. I loved 'em. Couldn't keep it though; it drank juice like a Russian
    sailor.

40 mpg from an XJ6 or 350 bhp from an XJ12. Take your pick :)

It says that everyone thinks the series III XJ6 was the best looking.
I don't. I think that the series I was the best looking.

  13. No idea now, I rarely use them and of the last dozen or so occasions
when I've had to around 60% have been cancelled or delayed for some
reason. The nearest usable station being ~9 miles away doesn't really
    help the cause.
