What? People who commit felonies can't vote? Only in America.

You don't know how many skinny ones died :)

The info from these things being actually tracked (as distinct from
people recalling what they've seen) is fairly clear. If they get
sick, the skinny ones died more often because they have fewer
reserves. Being sick is one hell of a strain on the system.

Recall that in this whole obesity moral panic people are seeing shapes
in their mind's eye that aren't what the shock headlines are about.
Say "fat" and people think "bloody huge" not "Marilyn Monroe" but
Monroe and people skinnier than her are the "obese" the figures are
about. If you restrict it to the size most people think of when
thinking "fat" you drop the number of obese people dramatically.

When I was 30kg less than I am now, I was "obese" as far as the
figures go, and lumped in with someone 30kg heavier than I am now as
far as the scare headlines go. Clare's a lot lighter than I am,
and by no means "fat" as anyone sane would define it, but she is as
far as the epidemiologists are concerned.

Hmm.. Junkfood Science (a useful place to find research about all
this) http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com check the right sidebar for
    the "Obesity Paradox" posts eg

there's a fair few more there, you'll have to wander through the
    archives.

Was about to be so in Oz, at least for the period they were in prison.
even if it was only a short time.

Only prisoners currently serving sentences longer than 3 years are
ineligible to vote, and anyone ever convicted of treason or treachery
    who has not been pardoned.

So that whole felony thing doesn't apply (sounds like it came from
someone who watches too much American TV doesn't it), as someone
convicted of an indictable offence, but not sentenced to 3 years or more
    is still an eligible voter.

One Of John Howard's "Me Toos" with George Bush. Read about the massive
deregistration of 'people of color' in Florida by George's brother Jeb just
before the 1999 presidential election, on the basis that they had the same
or similar names to people who had been convicrted of stuff.

    Exactly.

Mind you, a fair few will die of being male, as that seems to be the
    biggest single killer....

Shh... we didn't think they'd noticed.

The men wear out more quickly though. And impale themselves on the
    fixtures more often.

All that ugly fat could be made into biofuel. I can just see the Dawggie
out collecting buckets of liposuction sludge as we speak.

  12. a *huge* factor in it will be the changes in lifestyle, nutrition and
medical care which have taken place since the people who are 80, 90
and 100 years old today were kids and adolescents. I dare say the
reason most elderly people tend to be short and slim is that they just
used to grow them that way back then... a quick rifle through
    Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Human_height#History_of_human_height) shows that your own lot, the
Dutch, now only second in average height to us Yugos (suffer in yer
jocks, btw... :) ), were, barely a hundred years ago, known as a
nation of sawn-offs... better diet, clean drinking water, vaccinations
and less industrial pollution to breathe has led to bigger people...
what the implications of more leisurely working lives will be is
    anybody's guess. Today's 90-year-olds would've started their working
lives hammering away in factories and dockyards for 12 to 15 hours a
day. Now, would this have made them tougher and more capable of
fending off disease and whatnot in old age, or would it have worn them
out prematurely and given them arthritis... the studies don't address
    that.

    Waffle!
"Controversy aside, most of the people the state prevented from voting
    probably were felons.

Of the 19,398 voters removed from the rolls, more than 14,600 matched a
felon by name, birthdate, race and gender."

Somebody went to a great deal of trouble to remove "felons" from the voting
lists, some of whom were convicted 30 years previously and had not been
removed from the voting list till 1999.

OK, my dad has never reached 60 kg in his life and neither did his dad. On
the other hand, I'm closer to 85. So we can expect to see all the wiry
nonagenarians replaced in a few more years by fat bastards.

"Records show that DBT told the state it would not use race as a
criterion to identify felons. The list itself bears that out: More than
1,000 voters were matched with felons though they were of different races."

"For example, more than 1,300 registered voters were matched with felons
although their races or sexes were different, The Post found."
Somebody. Oooh, must be faceless men from the neo-con
military-industrial complex then. That "Somebody" was Database

    From http://johnrlott.tripod.com/op-eds/Lott_on_Fla_2000_Elec.pdf ;

    "6. CONCLUSION
It is difficult to see any evidence that African-American Democrats in
Florida were systematically discriminated against in terms of voting.
The results clearly indicate that with respect to nonvoted ballot rates,
the differences within races are as large as the differences between
races. If one believes that African Americans were systematically
prevented from voting, it is African-American Republicans who were the
    most harmed.
