Wrong place to ask I know ...but I expect someone will be able to advice...

Aged neighbours...the chap has recently died - he owns a motor - its in his
name...his wife does not drive...she wishes to sell his car. What should she
do about ownership and road tax which expires soon?

    Thanks, J

  2. Wait for the tax renewal to come through and then SORN it, unless she
    plans to drive it herself.

Otherwise just change the logbook into her name and make sure it's
insured in her name, and re-tax it.

    Who's going to moan?

Assuming the car was left to her in the will , it's now her vehicle.
She can send the log book off to DVLA along with a copy of the will or
whatever other proof they think is necessary and get her shown as the
    registered keeper.

At the same time get it SORN'd so that she doesn't pick up an automatic fine
    when the tax expires.
She can now sell it quite happily [1] and the new owner can tax it once they
    have insured it

[1] probably not the right expression given the circumstances

She needs to contact the DLVA, they have a special department that deals
with "deceased persons" (must use mediums!).

Anyway, she needs to sort out both the Vehicle records and his Driving
    License
    see http://www.dvla.gov.uk/search.aspx?keywords=deceased

  7. You have no idea how that made me laugh.

"Have you ticked the Change Of Ownership box, Mr Jones? Knock once for
    yes and twice for no...."

Road tax, just renew as normal.

Ownership, just send a copy of the death certificate with a
covering letter to the DVLA with the logbook etc when she sells
    it.
