    Hi,

The hubby wants to build a trike, and wants to buy a 30~ years old
Beetle, and build the trike thereupon. I say that he has to have road
tax on the Beetle whilst it is parked on the road, he says vehicles
over 30 years do not require road tax. Is that true?

Cars don't. You still need a tax disc that says they're exempt though.

I'm pretty sure its anything pre-73 thats exempt.
You still need to get a tax disk from the PO but its free of charge.

The tax exempt (Historic class) only applies to vehicles _manufactered_
prior to 1st January 1973. It's possible to calculate the date of
manufacture of the Beetle from its chassis number.

However to get the free tax disc, which must be displayed on the bike/car
in the normal way, the vehicle must be MOT'd and insured as usual.

If the vehicle in question isn't already tax exempt you'll simply have to
get a dating certificate through one of the recognised VW clubs.

It was set at 1st of january 1973 from when it was first bought in
(1994 vehicle Excise and Registration Act)

Just being to be pedantic they are technically zero rated rather than
    exempt!

Wouldn't such a severe modification mean it would need to be
re-registered on a Q plate and invalidate the current Historic Vehicle
    status?

    Paging someone who knows...

I don't see why they don't just do the conversion and then claim it was
done prior to the law changing. A mate of mine did that when he built a
Lotus 7 replica and would have needed a Q plate. He kept the mark 1
Escort reg number and used the chassis plate on the 7 replica chassis.
    No-one was any the wiser.

I find its always worth adjusting the pilot air screw a touch to cater
for the slightly higher octane petrol in the UK.

Seeing as you asked, earlier machines specify 82 octane.
