Applicant must have full bike licence, knowledge of how to pull wheelies and
excellent written communication skills. Previous journalistic experience
and own tombstone would be advantageous.

    Heh!

TOG's timely little journalistic exercise may come in handy for
    someone!

  11. Heh! And *nobody* has yet done it perfectly.

As regards the job - we offered the Number One candidate, Wonder Boy,
the job - and he coolly told us he had two interviews pending and he'd
    let us know.

And as he's that good, we upped the dosh, made him a written offer, and
said we'd hold it for a fortnight.

Don't you just hate (or fear!) people who are young and *fearsomely*
    talented?

If he is offered something else, and accepts it, we have a shortlist of
two - one recent graduate with some basic experience, a long way away
(and willing to relocate - he'd have to) and a frighteningly young girl,
also with next to nil experience, very local, and just as literate.

    Really, really tough call.

A propos of not a lot, I have a pet theory that the people who tend to
slag off journos the most - as opposed to taking the piss - are
generally the ones who tried for the job and got rejected. This
certainly holds good for bike journalism, more than just about any other
    category.

Incidentally, bike journo casualties in the line of duty are
(thankfully) very rare. There was some geezer on MCW, years ago. Peter
Bolt, the editor of MCN, in the late 1990s (he was pissed, silly
bastard)[1]. Chris Dabbs, MCN again, put himself in a wheelchair. Can't
    think of any others.

[1] EMAP announced the Peter Bolt Memorial Scholarship for trainees, in
his name, and quietly withdrew it after the inquest revealed that he was
over the limit at the time of the crunch.

If they're of equal skill, I'd take the young girl on, she's already
local so will easily remain tied to the location a lot longer.

The other guy would likely move, go for 18 months on the CV, then leg it
for a better job, leaving you back at square one.

  17. My initial thought, yes.

Always a worry, but if one thought like that, one would never hire
anyone competent, nichtwahr? And the possibilities for promotion are
good within the firm. Or relocation - we have offices in Paris,
    Brussels, Bonn, the US....
