So how long do you reckon it takes for the $40 a barrel to get used up? How
much oil is in transit (not the Ford!) at the $40 a barrel price?
Stop worrying about the price of fuel and start worrying about how long it will
take the NHS to sort out your ulcers.

Actually it's not far off. The crude price stood at $32 before
the Iraq war and fell throughout successive months until early
this year. The occupation of Iraq has had a stabilising effect on
oil prices which looks set to continue. It reached almost $60
during the Iran/Iraq war, then soared again when Saddam invaded
Kuwait. The higher oil prices of recent times have more to do
with OPEC manipulation along with al-Qaeda attrocities.
Nah. The Germans are being shafted almost as badly as we are
since they decided to take a leaf out of Reich Chancellor Brown's
book. The French are also keeping a close eye wondering if their
people might wear it. Not without street riots they won't.

And I can remember the furure wen Rhumney Biter went from 1shilling and six
pence to one shilling and nine pence
theat from 15 new pence to 17.5 new pence

Ps at the same time they uses asbestos fibre in the vats of beer to help the
    Sediment settle
well it was at least filteres before going into Casks

Interesting concept. I have an old photo of my grandfather taken
circa 1900 aged 4 years. He's sitting on a barrel of beer that is
clearly marked at "a farthing a pint". So back then 1p would have
bought you 9.6 pints, and if you earn the national average wage
of £25k p/a you could sup around 50,000 pints every week. Or 2.4
    Million pints a year.

At the end of the 60's a pint of beer cost approx 25p and £25 was
an average wage. Effectively you could put a zero on those two
figures to bring beer up to today's price so we earn twice as
much today as 40 years ago using that model.

    http://society.guardian.co.uk/drugsandalcohol/story/0,8150,1162644,00.html

But wait, back then a packet of 20 cigarettes cost 15p compared
to £4.50 today. Therefore we would need to earn £750 to buy the
same quantity so on average we are 50% worse off in wages using
    the Fag Index.

  5. I'd not be too much against economic union with the rest of europe.
However, that's a far cry form the euro super-state which appears to be the
    current thing on offer.

Eh? I don't understand this paragraph at all. Starting with why you think
there are 9.6 farthings in a penny and working onwards. What has today's
average wage got to do with the price of beer in 1900?

    4 farthings = 1 "old" penny (1d)
    1 "new" pence (1p) = 2.4 old pennies
    2.4 X 4 = 9.6
Bugger all really. Perhaps you didn't read the previous post I
was responding to. The idea was merely speculative musing to
highlight the effects of a century of inflation, not to be taken
    seriously.

Four farthings to one old penny - you know, the big heavy things,
somewhat larger than the modern 2p. In the days when there were
twelve pennies to the shilling, like.

You're thinking about the modern stuff, with five little newpees being
the equivalent of twelve of the older ones.

Ah, right, I didn't realise you'd switch from old pennies to new ones
    mid-sentence.
Ah, humour, eh? I've heard about that before.

We're not paying too much of the fuel. We're paying too much in fuel
tax. If fuel for transport was taxed at the same rate as heating fuel
    we'd be laughing...

Of course then we'd have to pay more income tax and we'd all complain
    about that.

We get the stupid government policy we deserve...

If you can't be arsed to go and read the article, it's
basically going on about how todays prices should be brought
up to a level relative to where they were in the 70s. The
reasoning behind this is that it would save the nation from
dying of all the drinking diseases in such large numbers.

The only thing that occured to me whilst reading it, was
that it might be time to invest in the home brewing
industry, as it looks like it might have a resurgence...

  13. Not twice the size. You were only 2' 6" than, which just made them look
bigger. The actual size has bobbed up and down a bit, but overall it
has varied relatively little over the years. For a while in the late
'50s there were two sizes, at something like 4d and 5d. The present day
Mars bars are about the bigger size.

you know not. There's a good FAQ on the BBC news web site answering all
    the most popular scare gossip.

I'm not sure this government will be able to do it though. They have
pussy-footed around on so many issues instead of being forthright and
decisive. Oh, sorry, they were decisive about Iraq, but that turned out
    to be a mistake.

They said they would ban fox hunting and we are still waiting. They
said their main concern would be education, education, education. Huh?
Now they can't make up their mind about smoking in public places.

Wouldn't we have more respect for them if they would just do what they
said they would do? Isn't that what strong leadership is all about?

  16. Don't fog the issue. We're on about the EU constitution, and we aren't
the only people who don't want your "super state". We don't have to do
it on our own, we aren't alone in our point of view, which is obvious if
you read it. So before you start perpetuating nonsense about the
constitution, find out what it really says and don't just regurgitate
    the usual anti-European twaddle.

You want "strong leadership"? Don't wish another Thatcher on us for
    goodness sake $-(

Certainly true, and Gordon Brown now looks certain to slap
another couple of pence on a litre in September.

Most diesel engined vehicles will run happily on vegetable oil,
new or used. In fact the diesel engine was originally intended to
run on nothing else. But the law states that if you do this you
must declare it to Customs & Excise then pay fuel tax of around
50p/litre. If it were possible to run on water you would have to
pay the same tax on every litre you used.
That's the British disease. We have been brainwashed into
believing we *must* pay increasing amounts of income tax or life
as we know it would grind to a halt. We cannot conceive the idea
we *should* be paying less if our taxes were spent efficiently.
Until the end of WW2 most working people paid NO income tax at
all. It was imposed on the masses by Labour to fund their vision
    of a socialist Britain.

Exactly the same amount of time as the cheaper oil held in stock
and in transit when the pump price went up - 24 hours.
