Why do we just accept it?

Honda Goldwing costs £5000 less in USA
A Made in 'Rip Off Britain' Rocket 3 costs £3000 less in USA

    Rocket 3
    US$15000 = GB£7700
    + VAT = GB£9050

  2. A health service aint free. Yanks pay for health direct, we pay more
tax and have it spent on our behalf.

  5. Using the term 'thinking' in it's loosest possible sense I presume?

Prices in the US are quoted without sales tax, as this
varies from state to state, upto around 10%. They also
exclude the registration fee as again this varies.
For example, California sales tax is around 8% and you
then pay a further registration fee.

In the UK, by law (IIRC), prices for consumers must be
quoted to include all applicable taxes, so the figures
quoted will include 10% vehicle duty and a further 17.5%
    VAT on top.

You may also want to consider that the US has a much
bigger market, so the prices can be lowered slightly
as volume purchases by the importer can attract
lower prices, and savings passed onto the consumer.

Besides, if you don't like it, you can always move there.

    Agreed.

The first line of my post was:
"Why do we just accept it?"

antonye () gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
    saying :
That'll be why he converted the US price to pounds then added VAT, I
    suspect...
    As we do here. £38.
10% "Car Tax" hasn't been on new vehicles since about the mid-late 80s.
    It's only VAT.
There's also the effect of the pound being strong/dollar down the toilet
at the mo. If the exchange rate went back to £1:$1.50, then the UK price
would be about equal to the US price.

If the competition is US built, then the exchange rate favours it, and
Triumph have to desperately squeeze the margins to compete. Alternative?
    Wave goodbye to the market.
    But there I agree wholeheartedly...

AOL. The thing with bikes such as the Rocket 3, is that there is
little competition for it, so if that's the kind of bike you're after,
you'll pay whatever you have to. Or not, as the case may be.

I feel the same with the BMW K1200R Sport - I quite fancy one having
sat on one at the NEC. There are a lot of bikes out there for a lot
less money, and many can and do say "Gixxer Thou" or "ZX10R" because
you certainly get a lot of bike for the dosh.
However, it's not as simple as that if you don't want a supersports
    bike.

Yeah, that's all true. But I think there's still something a bit 'iffy'
    going on here...

I was looking at the Yam XV1900[1] - which is ten grand OTR from a
'proper' Yam shop - and around eight and a half OTR as a parallel
import. I'm no economist, so the only explanation I can see for the
difference of 1500 quid (after all taxes and shipping costs have been
paid) is that someone, somewhere, is taking the piss. No doubt I shall
    be corrected shortly though.

    [1] I don't care, I like it.

Also he didn't add Federal and State taxes to the US$ price.
