RIP Kirk McCarthy

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Dave Milligan, Aug 15, 2004.

  1. A mate just rang me to tell me that Kirk McCarthy didn't make it this
arvo after a race crash at Willowbank in QLD.

He was listed as "Critical" and all I know is what I've just been
    told.

Kirk raced in the UK for several years in the Castrol Honda team under
team boss Neil Tuxworth before coming home to race various bikes.

From memory Kirk won an Aussie Superbike title in 1995 on a Honda
    RC45.

Hope he gets a good ride where he's gone.

Aug 15 - News - We are very sad to report that Kirk McCarthy has passed
away while undergoing surgery in Brisbane following an accident at
Queensland Raceway today during the sixth round of the Australian Superbike
Championship. Kirk has been part of the woodwork in Australian road racing
for more years than most of us can remember. He was extremely well liked
and will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Our thoughts are with his family and close friends, of which he had many

  7. Taken from an MA Media Release:

    "Hello all,

Victorian motorcycle racer Kirk McCarthy has passed away following an
incident in the penultimate round of the Australian Superbike
Championship at Queensland Raceway, near Ipswich, on Sunday, August
    15.

The incident occurred in the third and final Supersport race, which
left the 35-year-old in a serious condition. Despite immediate medical
assistance at the circuit and follow-up treatment at Ipswich Hospital,
McCarthy passed away early on Sunday evening.

Motorcycling Australia, the national governing body for motorcycle
racing, is currently investigating the incident, which occurred at
    Turn Four of Queensland Raceway.

McCarthy, from the outer Melbourne suburb of Mickleham, enjoyed a
distinguished national and international racing career, which included
stints in both the 500cc GP and Superbike World Championships
following his crowning as 1995 Australian Superbike champion.

Upon his return to the local racing scene in 2003, Kirk finished
seventh in the Australian Superbike Championship on a Honda before
recently joining Suzuki’s factory Supersport assault.

Motorcycling Australia and AUSCO, the promoter of the Australian
Superbike Championship, extend their deepest sympathies to Kirk’s
family and friends at the loss of one of motorcycle racing’s true
    characters.
