I'm not so sure. In fact, for all the insults that get traded on ukrm,
I think the standard of conduct inherent in the posters here
(certainly the ones I've met, who are numerous) is pretty high. To
give but one example, most people (including myself) used to find Bear
on ukrm insufferably rude on occasions. Yet he is, in real life
    (IYSWIM), a natural gentleman.

I suppose that's as good a cue as I'll get to wish all you RNBs a very
    Happy Christmas.

  4. Well, my education did go past the age of 12. By quite a long way...

But it never touched on Latin.
So. Let me recap. Words such as "maximum", "minimum" and "quantum" are
"true Latin" and "forum" is "false Latin". So the former take -a as plural
endings and the latter an[1] -s. Apart from learning Latin, is there
anyway to know? Is there a reference text? Is there a publically agreed
list of these words? Those of us with an education that went past the age
of 12 and who have no grasp of Latin (imagine! these people exist!) what
to know. It means I might actually learn something between the drinks...

  6. I'm sure the Romans would love to know that the word they used for
"meeting place" or "marketplace"[1] was false all along and didn't
    exist.

    [1] Yes, I know about agora.[2]
[2] Been a few years since my O-level Latin. Like I say, it's dog who's
the Latin expert, not I and emphatically not Des.

I spent Christmas with my brother, who works at the OED. Fora and forums
are both legitimate plurals of forum in English.

Oh, and Des is wrong about the latin, too.

    Ben,

Could you ask your brother when fora was accepted by the OED?
It was not in the 1989 edition.
Does he know all the words or just the motorcycling ones?

Sure. Don't think he's back at work until the New Year.
    All the words.

  11. So, if the OED listed "fora" as accepted, would that make it
"false" latin or a "true" latin plural?

I've recently purchased a Ribble. Which is nice.
    Only weighs 16 pounds.
Maybe something along those lines, hmmm?

Indeedy. Turning into a bit of a roadie atm.
I need to to get the miles in.
Indeedy. I'll be organising summat up on the Long Mynd in January.
    If anyone's interested[1]...

[1]This will involve large quantities of mud, scary downhill single track
and a *significant* quantity of uphill grind and mileage. You have been
    warned.
All applicants do so at their own risk.)
