Sorry, I must have missed this one first time around, but can't resist.
I think you'll find that forums is an accepted version (by uneducated
septics and other cunts), but that fora is the correct plural version of
    forum.

Taken from Microsofts tawdry tome, Encarta:

forum [fáwr?m] (plural forums or fora [fáwr?] ) n 1. place to express
yourself: a medium, for example a magazine or newspaper, in which the
public may debate an issue or express opinions.

FWIW I think that Encarta is wrong to allow forums and IMHO it is
symptomatic of the process of 'dumbing down' by fat Americans and people
    who know **** all.

    HTH, HAND etc.

You obviously didn't study Latin. Forum is taken from the Latin for
'outdoor place' and no Latin based nouns that I ever came across are
'pluralised' by adding an 's'. I take it that you think the plural of
    Hippopotamus is Hippopotamuses?

Fora is the correct plural of forum and it has been ever since I was a
kid at school being forced to learn Latin.

Sorry, that should have been "can of worms", not "can or worms".

For those who missed it the first time round, the OED, 2nd edition,
1989 only lists forums as the plural, though by 1996 the Oxford
    English Reference Dictionary lists both.

Des, there's nowt wrong with fora as a plural of forum. Now let the
matter rest. You're wrong, just admit it.

  8. ISTR the Latin plural of "rhinoceros" (same spelling) is "rhinocerotes".

    As in the iambic hexameter:

    "Femina rhinoceros cum rhinocerote marito"

Except that it's used in the singular there....

Hmmm... where's dog when you want him?

    Nice snipping...

You removed the bit that pointed out you were delusional and that fora
    was a plural of forum.

I also see no acceptance of error if you read what I typed.

You must have been fucking misreable if this is you happy.
Judging by what you've posted here I think plenty would.

    message
    "rhinocerotes".

Rhinoceros is derived from the greek rhinokeros and forum doesn't come
    from a Greek base.
...and rhinocerotic is the english adjective. Ahem.

So they corrected it in 1996?

OK, I've googled for the prior 'discussions' and at this point I will
bow out with my sanity intact and let sleeping worms lie.

  13. Ta for that. I suppose I could have found that out for myself if I'd
been arsed enough, but it's interesting.

Actually, that now makes sense in the context of the Latin verse, which
was something I had to learn yonks ago.

I'd class success as the amount of progress you've made from where you
started off in life, to where you are now.

In my case at a young age I was written off as a kid that would amount
to nothing and probably had learning difficulties. (I was actually just
    disinterested in school)

Since then I've been entirely self sufficient from the day I left home
(with about £100 in my pocket), I've traveled all over the world both
for my own enjoyment and also with work, career wise I've earnt the
respect of both my customers and my peers, and it's rewarded me ok but
I'll probably never be 'rich'. All this I have done whilst coping with
the disability of being ugly and ginger.

As you're probably aware my comment was tongue in cheek, everyone
    measures success differently.

I don't consider those in ukrm to be my peers; they're people I (in
some cases) know and in most don't. I'm talking about professional
    stuff.
    It's a serious comment.

What's the line? "Don't presume to tell me what I know and don't
    know"?

Oh, and fora is a valid plural of forum.

Whats the plural of pedant, because I can see a pair of them from here.

  19. Whilst I still think you are trolling, I just
want to check: are you saying that the plural
    forms
maxima, minima, quanta, spectra and strata

(to pick out the ones I've used in work situations) are wrong?

    William Grainger, Dec 23, 2003
