Riding in the rain

I've noticed only recently that I ride faster when it's raining. I think
I now know the reason why.

I think it is because I now find riding in the rain usually quite a
miserable experience and subconciously want to get to my destination. I
don't ride stupidly faster just 5 to 10 mph faster. I'm not a fast rider
by any stretch of the imagination anyway.

It just seemed strange considering the unfavourable road conditions. I do
leave bigger braking distances right enough and get on the brakes earlier
so one probably cancels out the other.

Any one else got this habit?

    Nope.

"Half the speed - twice the fun." (tm Champ)[1]

Experience has taught me that my 'making progress' speeds in the dry are
just on the edge of a little too fast for the wet so I slow down when it
rains. A lot less painful, imho.

[1] A nice jaunty little phrase which rolls neatly off the tongue and is
absolute bollox. In truth it is more like 75% the speed and 3.5 times
the fun but doesn't scan nearly as well.

"Twice the fun at half the speed", actually. And I got it off my mate
    Pat Sefton.
I reckon it's 90% of the speed and 1.25 times the fun.

Granted that things like lap times would tend to support your argument
regarding speed but it is more fun than that, lots more.

You must be doing it wrong in the dry then.

Well of course. If I were doing it right I would be in the FBC,
    wouldn't I?

Besides mine is a blue one so it is inherently dog slow.

Hate the rain and hate weather gear. I'm that bloke you see
waiting under the nearest bridge smoking a fag 'til it blows
    over.

I've waved to you knowing that you must've thought I was way cool to
    ride in torrential rain.

On pavement - definitely not. But on gravel / dirt I used to
and occasionally still do. On a really wet road I can't see
any damp or wet spots that are potentially treacherous.
That and the fact that water actually binds sand and other
    loose stuff.
After I realised I had this habit I've tried to be more
realistic, the wet makes a lot of surfaces more slippery.
