Nothing. It wasn't difficult *because* I had the paperwork with me. Had
neither of us been carrying any, things might not have been so simple.

Maybe you missed the 'too' in mine?

When I got tugged just outside Passau in Germany in Timo's old
Mitsubishi Evo II the copper said I was lucky I had all documentation
and a letter from Timo giving me permission to drive the car, or I'd
    have been in big bother.

Ahh, if only 'twer that simple. There're plenty of firms making such things
as chrome plated, silver plated and gold plated plastic buttons, but there
isn't one who will divulge their secret for doing it, which is why there's a
push to get a "chrome paint" out that actually looks and behaves like
    chrome.

The chrome paint is available, but the work needed is fucking horrendous and
the actual chrome paint itself is roughly 120 quid for a litre but you need
special primer, undercoat, intercoat and clear coats tp, so you need a
"kit". A nice round sum it is too. 400 earth monies for a 1 litre kit.

  8. If Timo had had his sense of humour switched on, the German draft of the
letter would have read: "If you are reading this, the car has been
stolen. Nick whoever is in the driving seat."

I can be wrong: I don't bother about plods, gatsos, penalties, etc. It
takes the fun out of riding.

Your license could be suspended or cancelled, depends on the type of
    infraction.
If cancelled, you'll have to pass your full test (theorical and
practical) after a delay of several months/years imposed by the judge.
If it was just suspended, you don't have to redo any test.

If you just lost all of your 12 points (in France points are subtracted
from your total, not added), I think that you only have to pass the
    theorical exam.

As usual, better not being caught.
If you get caught, depends on who got you, and when.
The 3 last times I was arrested for speeding by gendarmes I was able to
talk my way through it, maily because it was local gendarmerie on rural
    twisties.

In Spain you need to have the photocopy legalized ("compulsada") by
some police station. They look at both documents and if they match,
    put a stamp.

French may require something similar, as photo(copy)shop is quite
    easy.

It does not have any official value: if you cannot show a valid license,
    you're fucked.

Ouais, mais... what I said does not actually apply to driving license,
    sorry.

Police stamped photocopies in Spain are only valid for the vehicle's
documentation. However, you may "forget" your Spanish driving license
at home as you can show your ID card and they can check you ID is
associated to a driving license (a 12 euro fine may apply). But I
guess furriners will need original driving license, too.

A police stamped photocopy of the ID card is valid for vehicle
    transfer, though.

Gendarmerie and Mairie used to stamp "certifiée conforme" on official
documents photocopy but the law changed circa 2000:

    http://www.service-public.fr/accueil/certification.html

Only official document requested by foreign administrations will be
    certified by french administration.

You must show the original of the license to the plods, or a photocopy
AND the duplicata of the renewal form you were given at the Prefecture,
the duplicata of the "Déclaration de Perte" at the Police Station, etc.

If you just get a photocopy, you could be fined for "Défaut de permis".
