Not sure of details, just heard on the news that two city-bound lanes on
Military Road are closed due to a rider fatality.
Sympathies go out out to anyone who knew the victim.

I was going to say that but thought, Nah, too obvious.

730 people will die in Oz today, but only four as a result of traffic
accidents. Why do we think it is a problem?

Do you have details? So far all I've heard I that the rider went up the back
of a taxi, bounced, then went under a mobile crane (ouch). I ride this road
everyday and never considered it a 'killer' road. I guess he was extremely
unlucky. I wonder how long before they put (another) speed camera there.

I look at it the other way. 20-something people die in a terrorist
explosion in Bali, and there is a massive public outcry. There are
support hot-lines, charities to donate to support the families, etc etc.

More than double that number die on the roads over the Christmas
holidays, and all we get is a small snippet in the news paper.

Both are sudden, both are unexpected (for the families at least, not for
the statisticians), so why is one more important than the other?

Surely instead of spending millions sending troops to Iraq to fight the
war on intelligence we should be spending the millions on the war on
    potholes?

Of course I can see the headlines if we did....

Howard says "We are going to war based on the evidence that Kenworth
Trucks are indeed manufacturing WMPs. (Weapons of Mass Pothole-creation.)"

If you look at the "Horrific" holiday road tolls over the last few years,
used to justify double points and fines, and divide the number killed by
the number of days, (which seem to be more each year), you'll find that the
daily road toll doesn't vary by more then 20% from any other day or weekend
    in the year.
That sounds like a good plan but you haven't thought it through. All those
young idiots will live to become older idiots and then pensioners who, as
everybody knows, contributed nothing to this country during their useless
life, and should be put down, so that the current generation of young idiots
    can stay on the dole.
