Ride to BOSM from Oop North

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Hendrick, Apr 1, 2005.

  1. If anybody fancies joining us on the way down to the BOSM next Saturday,
we'll be leaving Harrogate at about 1pm, and taking an interesting route via
Silkstone (near Barnsley), Glossop, and Buxton.

People are welcome to gather at ours during the morning, plus we could meet
up with people at Woolley Edge services just south of Leeds, if it suits
people who are less north than us.

I'll be taking it fairly easy as my R1 is showing the first signs of a
fucked up 2nd gear selector[1], so I'll be mostly avoiding beans in second
until I strip it apart for repairs (eek).

[1] Apparently quite common for 98-99 models (

My CG had better brakes than this bike. At least they were adequate for
the top speed of the thing.
You won't wind me up on this one, because mine don't have an air
problem. Master cylinder rebuild kit being fitted tomorrow. If that
doesn't do it then we're on for getting R1 calipers fitted and these
piece of shit Tokicos are going on eBay..

I've been busy looking at the Harris catalogue and in particular the
Brembo, AP Racing and PVM pages. I need about 2 grand to put a decent
set of brakes on my bike.

Wooley edge is 37 M1 isn't it... I may be tempted, do any of the mad manc
mob want to come over this way before heading south?

  7. Unfortunately it is just in second, and I had the cover off and checked the
detent roller spring on Wednesday night... it's fine (

I'm hoping it's just the selector dog, but won't know until it's in bits.

I don't suppose anybody has a manual handy have they?

More likely to be the engagement dogs on second gear, rather than the
selector forks. Either way, it's not that big a job. I thought R1s had a
cassette type gearbox that you could pull from the side without
    splitting the cases.

Pair of good R1 calipers can be had for about 80 quid, then there's a
master cylinder to go with it. Luckily I can use the resevoir from the
Tokico set up and it'll look like a standard set up at the handlebar
end. All I'd have to make is a pair of alloy plates to go between forks
and calipers to allow for the difference in mounting points. Piece of
piss, and I have the material in the garage to make them from too.

I thought the brakes on this one were a bit shit, though miles ahead
of the bandit (which had the same braking distance as the Exxon Valdez)

And then I pulled a rolling stoppie with the front wheel locked [1] [2]
and realised maybe they're a bit better than I thought.

    [1] Accidentally
[2] Sadly not into a roundabout, while wheelying.

I'd have thought that anything amiss with the calipers would have shown
up with the strip Loz did. They can't be cracked or anything can they?
or if they're 2 part calipers is there anything wrong with the joining
    surfaces?

How hard would it be to fit a complete 7R front-end?

I don't know, but I've almost given up trying to find out. Master
cylinder is the last thing I'm prepared to rebuild in my quest for
decent brakes. From then on it becomes a conversion to something known
to be good i.e. R1 calipers and m/cyl.

I wouldn't bother, the 9R forks feel fine now I've got the damping
settings right and 7Rs have the same shite calipers. What's the point?

  20. Oh yus!

Unfortunately it doesn't pop the front end up in third unless your really
trying hard (crests!)... and that might have something to do with why second
    is shafted!

Be good to see you next week )
