You could have turned into the garage. Plenty of opportunities to dominate
the situation in that sort of arena.

    *DING*DING*DINGLEY*DING*!

One of my minor hobbies is road-stalking wankers who do dumb stuff, then
get stressed and start with the hand-gestures.

If I'm not in a hurry, I just follow them for a while. Just pop into
their mirrors occasionally, make yourself known. An occasional flash of
main-beam and wave can help. Speed up when they speed up (they never go
*that* fast), slow down when they slow down.

    Fun, it is.

When they're spending more time watching their mirrors then they are
watching the road, I usually let them off. I had one on the phone once,
    clearly shitting himself.

Of course, if one of them ever stopped and looked serious, I'd just ****
    off over the horizon sharpish.

Nick, have a Google for "Dave Corden" and spend some money.

**** that. All that's needed is to accelerate away at a half
reasonable pace. Even an ER-5 should piss off into the distance from a
    traffic light.

FWIW I twice had people get mad with me when riding a C90 back in the
early 80s, wearing proper gear[1] though. That was a bit awkward as I
couldn't easily get away after punching one of them through the car
window and kicking the driver's door of the other one. Got clear
    eventually though.

Just once in recent years did someone take exception to me filtering -
I was on the Sprint ST on a dual carriageway joing the A428 in
Cambridge. Some guy in an open-topped Saab tried to knock me off. Once
I'd joined the 428 he succeeded in catching up, then moved across
towars me. I humoured him for just a few seconds before removing his
wing mirror with my hand. Learned a valuable lesson here - it hurts
like hell if you hit it forward; up or down would have been better.

Well if we are willy waving tonight... <thinks> no, some things are
    best left unpublished.

This past few years there is deffo an increase in Tottie exhibiting
murderous tendancies in road rage attitude towards bikers. I like the
long haired ones, handy for swinging the bitches around while uttering
    useful words of education.

In this respect I've found NI to be a fine place. There are so many
bikers here, Road Racing is such a huge thing and there are a good few
sporting icons so I've *never* been cut up or been glared at while on
    bikes.

you appear to have missed the point.

Sure, there are cunts in cars all over the place; the point is not to
be bothered by them/know what the appropriate responce is.
and your discription of your actions indicates that you do not have
even a fraction of the experience needed to know how[1][2] to behave in
    this sort of situation.

[1] in general, the correct response to this sort of thing is to open
the fucking throttle and **** off through the traffic into the
distance, preferably giving the twat in the car the finger with your
left hand as you do so, laughing like a tit.
[2] and secondarily, not feel the urge to post to Usenet about what for
most people is a fairly quotidien and unremarkable event.

This bit is optional though, as is any other kind of "wind-up toy". I
tend not to bother these days and just **** off.

I didn't miss your point at all. Your point was that because I've
only been riding for just over a year I've no idea how to handle this
situation. My point was that people that have been riding for many,
many years, as demonstrated from some of the posts in this thread have
handled the situation badly too. I guess that until one has
experienced every single possible situation one will not know how to
handle them correctly, especially when the situation was unexpected in
    the first place.
At last: You've said something constructive - thank you.
Would you prefer to muddle through something that you regarded as
important, or ask the advice of a group of people who generally have a
clue? Well, some of them, anyway. Some of them appear to be acting
like stupid fucking little kids and have contributed nothing but, "Oh,
look at him - what a silly boy <giggle giggle>" which I'm sure is VERY
big and VERY cleaver and I hope it makes them a better person in the
long run. I also hope it makes YOU a better person.

I suppose I'd have got a couple of grand for the bike (he would have
really fucked up my clocks) and some time off of work.

I phoned my riding school up last night at some ungodly hour to ask
their opinion and do some more advanced training - I may well ring
them up on Monday as it's something that I've been intending to do for
    a while.
The BotM krew were with me yesterday, so you could probably ask for
    their opinion.

Letting him pass would have been the best option. A more theatricle
one would have been to plant myself in the middle of the road down the
single lane, getting off the bike and having a word there and then. It
would have held up the traffic and made a point but he'd be a caged
animal unable to go forward without running over the bike and unable
to go back because of the traffic behind him. Probably not the best
situation to put an angry person.
